I hear their all white employees are known to steal more than the actual customers! That is based on data research through many retailers and the only ones accusing people of color of stealing "so much" are whites, that is only to put the focus somewhere else. That's also a tactic used by many whites (not all) to use lies about blacks committing crimes to cover their lies/actions! Just because someone says it to be so doesn't make it so!

I looked at her repeated my claim and said to her like this man to look at the security cameras and come back to me. She later came back and apologised and tried to give me some cream as an apology. I snapped out it might not have been lady like to react that way but they wasn't gonna embarrass me and accuse me in front of the entire store. they called security and tried to search my body over a dollar pair of flip flops!! I called corporate standing right in the middle of the store..and when I was done with them the security was fired...the BLACK CASHIER was fired and the manager for listening to that dizzy chick. N on top of that they had to apologize one by one to my face and say sorry...it was a concrete request of mine. Corporate gave me 1000.00 dollars in coupons because they knew that if I sued I would have received far more but just them publicly apologizing and losing their jobs was enough!!! Normally I do not comment on racial profiling videos. But this one got me asking a lot of questions after reading some comment here. I noticed that some people were attacking the guy who is the victim here; calling him a scam. I am a black African, living in Asia and I have walked into a clothing store many times, I MEAN MANY TIMES, with the labels of the previously purchased wears that I got from the same store. Because most times I leave the house in a heist. The sales person always ask me first, with a smile if I just got the cloth am wearing because the labels are still on it, we would both laugh and I will tell them I had it before and forgot to take off the label. That will be the end of it, because they don’t have the racist mentality like some people in America has. My point is this. People like “YOU” blaming the victim in a clear racial profiling incident like this one, are part of the problems that America has in an issue like this.

Sad too, because even an apology might have fixed this. I don't think they checked anything. I think they wanted to see how he would react, to see if he'd self incriminate or admit. But after they wasted enough of his time and didn't get what they were pecking for, they still assumed he was a shoplifter, and remained salty as he left. I'm guilty of stereotyping clothing situations. I work in a small retail store. You come in with a huge oversized puffy jacket in 90 degree weather, act sketchy, wandering isles, avoiding eye contact, and making it a point of leaving isles I have vision in, and ya. I'm going to be a bit suspect. But you know what, I call something wrong - I damn well am humble enough to apologize, tell you why I thought what I thought, and recognize I have not only wasted my time, but yours as well. Sure the hell wouldn't let anyone leave my store thinking any less of themselves, when they didn't do anything wrong to begin with.

@Nique at Nite, first, thank you for this video. And frankly, I AM glad I do not live in Iowa right now. Second, I happen to be a Gay man of Cuban descent, and a rather light-skinned man at that, and one of my closest friends is a woman of color; specifically, a black woman. We have had this conversation, because both she and I actually go well out of our way to avoid pulling the race card, but sometimes, circumstances in life one feels one must pull the race card. I do not recall the last time I noticed being racially-profiled in a retail environment, then again, I live in a city with a large Latin American population, and like you, I AM a repeat customer at the stores with good merchandise, good prices, and very good customer service. I have more respect for Old Navy for taking care of this situation as quickly as they did, but this situation is far too common and is happening far too often. It seems to me too many people are trying to turn modern-day black men into modern-day Emmett Tills, but I digress.

In retail when the word "tag" is said it means either price tag or the inside garment tags. I don't see any price tags on the jacket (from the clips I have seen)...the garment tags have the barcode attached that can be manually entered. That is what is shown in the video. I worked at Banana Republic, which is part of the same company at Old Navy. Coat price tags are typically attached on the zipper, or by the size tag on the collar. So, if a tag was visible I don't know any retail worker that wouldn't mention the jacket. However, since I have years in retail experience I can tell you that.... One, the cashier was most likely instructed by management to proceed to look into the system to see if it was purchased. Two, the DM & SM did drop the ball with their behavior in this situation. The cameras should have been checked ASAP, before proceeding with the checkout process. Three, communication was an issue here. The reasons we use walkies is for situations like these, where we can communicate with one another quickly and easily. The SM should have instructed the cashier to slow down the process while cameras were being checked. Four, in retail you don't admit fault or apologize. This is retail 101, in doing so it opens the doors to legal proceedings. This is from corporate, a policy. Five, YES, you can check the status of an item to see if it is purchased or not. Not every brand can do this, it just depends on their system. Most cases a card has to be swiped, and the price tag scanned in order to check the status. Every store is run differently bc managers manage differently. So, I can tell you that management was rusty with policies. Old Navy simply had no choice to let these 3 employees go bc of the media attention. If this was bait for Old Navy, well, they fell for it.
@marteli
6 жыл бұрын
Gabriel Parrish Oh, I know. They were fired bc of the media attention around this case. I have 10 years in retail, 6 of those 10 years have been in management. I would admit I would have handled the situation differently, but I would also have noticed the jacket if I saw tags. Leading into me to question the situation, however, I would have done it secretly. I don't believe race was an issue, bc part of retail is preventing theft.

Gabriel Parrish Well, we don't know what the employees said, or how they said it. From the clips I saw it seemed there was a lot that was not recorded. Gap, Inc. does have a Zero mean Zero policy, which is against discrimination of any sorts. They are excellent with their Code of Business Conduct. Since I have no idea what they said, I do believe their actions to the situation lead to an investigation. Which bc of the media helped with the finale outcome of termination. I do believe the situation was handled badly, which it leads me to believe they weren't current on policies or needed more training.
