Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Oldmeldrum, commonly known as Meldrum, a village and parish in the Formartine area of Aberdeenshire. It is home to one of the oldest whisky distilleries in Scotland, Glen Garioch, which was built in 1797. Oldmeldrum was made a burgh of barony in 1672. The parish of Meldrum was known as Bethelnie until 1684. It was a centre of the hosiery trade in the 18th century. Each summer on the third Saturday in June the village is host to the popular Meldrum Sports, which began in 1930 and features highland games, highland dancing, piping, five-a-side football, displays, stalls and a beer tent.
Donald Gordon, was born in Oldmeldrum on December 11, 1901. He was a Canadian businessman and the former President of the Canadian National Railways from 1950 to 1966. He went to Canada at an early age. At 15, he joined the Bank of Nova Scotia in Toronto, becoming assistant chief accountant and assistant manager of the Toronto branch. In 1935, he was appointed Secretary of the newly formed Bank of Canada and later became deputy governor. At the outbreak of war, Gordon was appointed Chairman of the Foreign Exchange Control Board, and then from 1941 to 1947, he was Chairman of the Wartime Prices and Trade Board. In 1944, he was made a Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George. And, in 1968, he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. Died on May 2, 1969.
William Keith, was born in Oldmeldrum on November 18, 1838. He was a Scottish American painter famous for his California landscapes. He is associated with Tonalism and the American Barbizon school. Although most of his career was spent in California, he started out in New York, made two extended study trips to Europe, and had a studio in Boston in 1871 and one in New York in 1880. Keith was part of a group of friends of John Muir who met in San Francisco starting in 1889 to support the establishment of Yosemite National Park. This group went on to encourage Muir to establish an association to protect the Sierra Nevada. In 1892, this plan was realized when the Sierra Club was founded. Keith died in his home at 2207 Atherton Street in Berkeley, California in 1911. He is buried in plot 14b at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland
Old Meldrum railway station served Oldmeldrum on a line from Inverurie through Lethenty and Lochter until 1965.
