You clearly are a very good metal worker. Your skill at making metal shine is perfect. However I have to comment on this tool specifically. I own over 200 hand planes. I own several versions of this plane from Stanley to VerItas and the like. The tool is meant to be pushed in the other direction. This is a cabinet scraper. It is sharpened in one of two ways. One is square and then the edge is rolled with a burnisher to create a hook. The other is at a 45 degree angle and then also hooked with a burnisher. This creates very fine shaving to level a surface on the final shaping. I kinda cringed when I saw you pull it the wrong way. The other thing is the bottom is normally lapped flat on a very flat surface to eliminate high and low spots. This is what helps create the finish on wood that you get with metal!

Right you are. I love this channel, too, but had the same reaction as you did. No worries, and the reply you got was respectful and proper. The tools of the cabinet making trade are very specialized and some are just plain weird. Most prefer to use a burnished card scraper. Or even a shard of glass.

I liked when he cut the bench instead of a piece of scrap wood. When I was about 8 or 9 I was playing with my pocketknife in the school yard and an older kid, Joey, asked to see the knife. He put the edge to the corner of an aluminum window casing of the school and drew downwards on it. A long sharp sliver of aluminum peeled off the building. As it did, Joey said…., “AWWWWWWE Rich!!!! THATS A SHARP KNIFE!!!!”

Sevgiler.

Actually, it's not! This is a cabinet scraper, meant to be pushed and cutting through a burr carefully rolled over at the edge of the blade. A spokeshave is a narrow twohanded plane that works trough a cutting action from a sharply edged blade. Not through scraping. Sorry, I take my craft serious....
