In this week's tool repair and restoration video, we show how to restore an old, probably vintage, rusty, crusty, broken hand sickle. Spring is coming and there is clean up to do in the yard and so this estate sale barn find is the perfect choice for the next project on the channel.
I start off by removing the handle which broke off super easily given the amount of rot. I decided to reuse the handle pins which were still attached so I removed each by simply filing the peened end and used a hammer to break them free of the tang. After removing the loose rust with a wire brush, I constructed an electrolysis apparatus and proceeded to remove the majority of the rust with that method, which I've never done before. A light wash in the parts washer and quick run across a wire wheel removed whatever was left after electrolysis. I welded the corrosion pits using a 1/16-inch 6013 welding rod set at very low DC- voltage. Next I built a forge, overheated the part, and almost ruined it beyond repair. After cleaning and tempering at 450°F (232°C), I hammered the sickle back into shape and heat treated a second time, this time being more careful with the heat. I build a new handle from a piece of left over oak hardwood flooring, zinc plated the blade to prevent future corrosion, and attached and shaped the handle. The end of the video shows me using the restored sickle to clean an overgrown alley next to my property.
