The phillips head screws allow parallel alignment adjustment on the blades. If you don't have the gauge, set them up correctly with a micrometer ensuring same distance from the back of the blade holder to the front of the blade. Check this on both blades. This will ensure that both blades are parallel and equidistant from the timber.

Thank for the input i put in new blades and can't see any different and have done a lot of wood in the last 4 years. This is from another person. Dave S 8 months ago My new blades for my AP-10 arrived today but I couldn't find my orange jig to ensure they were installed correctly so I watched this video and set the blades accordingly. Not feeling totally comfortable with this approach I set off one last time to find the jig.... success! I put the first blade assembly in the jig and the blade was out less than 1/32 of an inch. So I did the second blade assembly and it was already spot on. So if you don't have a jig I suspect these instructions would get you close enough to be able to use it.

I have the exact same one that I have had and been working for about 40 years . There’s a jig that came with it to set the blade and I would say that you need to use it to set the cutters . It also came with a jig for sharpening the cutters but I always send mine out for sharpening. I have no idea how many board feet I have surfaced with it and it’s still going strong.

You will get snipe on all planers it does help to lift the board up some when it is coming out or better yet best to run one board right up to it or end to end or use a scrap board the same height than the last board will get the snipe. Hope this helps thank you.

Buddy you should use the blade depth tool it came with. Its most likely orange. You set both the blade and blade holder in the fixture and the knifes edge seats into place while the blade holder sits in its own groove, keeping the correct height of the blade. Just thought id throw that out there.

You have to set those blades with a vernier caliper. You could be high and it'll feed but not cut. You could be too low and the lumber won't even fit in. You could have one blade higher than the other. I found that the blade in the holder should be 1.500" (check both ends) is perfect for feed and cut.

The blades do not seat all the way back as you say around 4:50. There is a special guide piece that you use to get the proper seating on the cutter blades for the AP10. This is shown in the manual. It is orange. What I have not been able to figure out is how you adjust the cutter heads right to left to make sure the cutter head comes down square and flat. The manual isn't very good on this. If anyone knows please advise!

My grandfather gave me this one a few years ago and there's a huge chip in the blade and it was misaligned. I wasn't sure how to change out the blade, some people told me it took a helical cutter and then some told it took an adjustment gauge to set up properly. I'm happy to see that neither of those are true, although I'm sure a gauge would help though.

Ty for posting the video. While I'm lucky enough to have the gauge settings for blade installation, I wasn't sure how difficult it would be to even start the replacement process. This video helped me realize that its pretty straightforward and also that I'm lucky the fellow I bought it from provided me with the gauges and two extra sets of blades. I bought this planer for $80 a few years back and am only just now putting it to use. I ran a 2x4 through that had a nail and it did some gnarly damage to the blade, hence the replacement need. Additionally, the drive belt fell off and is now only 2/3 or what it once was; I got what's left back on and the machine running, but I just ordered new belts via amazon ... pack of two for $16.99 Here is the Amazon link for the belts for anyone that might be in need: www.amazon.com/dp/B07D626G9G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_SXG8YDYA0QFJS73K6KFM

Thanks for the video, it helped show me that it really was that easy and straight forward. A quick tip that I came up with, I used a 3 inch putty knife under the blades to lift them out. The back piece of the holder kept getting caught on the head. The putty knife helped keep everything flat as I lifted up. It helped while installing the blades as well, it kept my fingers safely away from the blade edge.

Harvey, I bought one off a guy yesterday and this will make my 3rd planer. May I suggest using a magnet to pull off the blade covers and also to remove the blades as well. I just don't want you to cut your self up during the next replacement cycle. otherwise, it is good little planer when you get it dialed in. It's funny to hear you refer to the Ryobi AP-10 as a "real old machine". I bought mine new around 1990, so that's about 30 years, and because it hasn't seen all that much use it looks almost new( but I do need to change the blades). My table saw and drill press are about 10 years older. I'm 63, and to me an "old machine" is maybe from the 3rd quarter of the 20th century and "real old" is from before that. Yes, totally subjective. The AP-10 was the first portable planer on the market and does a quite decent job for it's size and price. The competition quickly came out with 12" and bigger models.
