Thank you very much for this! An excellent behind the scenes and in play example, allowing us to see your methods, reasons, and motivations for solo adventuring :) I'd really like to know how your party got on at some future time.

It's like game creation, prep, and play with improvisational writing throughout. Also started thinking a light but narratively inspirational free-flowing system such as 'Dungeon World' could plug in quite well to such a setup. Since a notable facet of the Powered By The Apocalypse system is how often challenge rolls result in a mixed "you succeed, but at a cost or drawback". Which helps stoke the invention of further conflict and struggle in the narrative.

Yes, it definitely could! I enjoy "Dungeon World" a lot and will perhaps do a video with it some day. Here (for whatever reason that made sense to me at the time) I was trying as best I could to keep the actual rules contemporary to Valkenburg Castle (from 1980)--hence "In the Labyrinth" and "Wizard/Melee".

The Dictionary of Symbols looks fascinating. What a great idea to use that as a tool to build your game world.

David Coutts Thanks David. I’d been hesitant to try to film things like this as I’m not a minis person and don’t have cool physical settings to show but I’m glad you are enjoying the content.

This is great! I like to use old dungeon crawls like Warhammer Quest and Advanced HeroQuest, along with books like the Dungeon Alphabet, to create solo RPG-like games.

IN some ways I actually prefer RPing solo, because there aren't any distractions, and I can get totally into my imagination and the atmosphere.

I really have to remember to print out and card up the various tables like you do there. It's really a good idea that you can swap between mythic and Scarlet Heroes with the printed off cards. That'd be so much smoother than what I do.

It's a pretty easy and cheap way to make playing more comfortable--and also not end up ruining pages of certain books. It's also a physical reminder that I can be flexible in what I'm doing as I go.

All these are fantastic. I no longer have any friends who are into RPG's so this stuff is very informative and inspiring. If you are into fantasy solo gaming then you might want to investigate the following. Some are pretty expensive, but they are all great solo experiences. (You can check out youtube vids of them to try before you buy of course). Gloomhaven, Mice and Mystics, Tunnels and Trolls, Tales of the Arabian Nights, Pathfinder adventure Card Game. Arkham Horror Card game ( Also Shadows of Brimstone and Kingdom Death are great solo boardgames, but expensive and more for anyone into miniatures assembly and painting). also Legacy of Dragonholt is a big box choose your own adventure game, but I haven't played it.

madquest8 Thanks for the suggestions. So glad you are enjoying my content. Gloomhaven is something I want but it is pricey and M&M has been on my list too. I love the Pathfinder card game Skulls and that is on one of my top 5 vid (can’t recall which one). Thx for mentioning those other games too.

Really good video again. It is so nice to see how others do it. I myself uses hex maps or square maps and various figures from old games. Or reaper minis when i want some special hero or monster. Question: do you know of a general monster bestiarium. By general i mean that the monster stats can be easily modified to any system. Fantasy theme of course. Thanks again for great content.

Kent H Hey Kent. Glad you enjoyed it. At times I have used small maps but with age perhaps I’ve gotten lazy(?)/more loosey goosey with that. THE TOME OF ADVENTURE DESIGN is 1/4 about generic monster design from choosing general type (fey, elemental, undead, etc) to attributes and general combat profiles. I go to that if I don’t want to have to do too much modification/translation from another system.

Geek Gamers I'm using Larger Than Life (Two Hour Wargames) as a rubric and general stuff generator, the Mythic Variations (the yellow book) book for an Oracle, and some homemade cards with generic clues and items to give me a timer before reaching a climax scene ( 10 clues found...the big bad shows up ).

I was looking at Scarlet Heroes after seeing it mentioned on the video and the Wilderness Solo section is almost the way I play (hexes and all) and when an encounter happens I set up my 3'x3' "battle board" and play out the encounter.

Just scored a good unpunched copy of Valkenburg! Can't wait for it to get here! Also if anybody knows where I can get a very good to excellent copy of TSRs Vampyre for a decent price, I would really appreciate it! ;)

usapatriot4163 That’s great! I will be interested to know how you enjoy it. I’ve been trying to get my hands on a copy of Vampyre for a long time myself but it seems hard to find and the few who have it want far too much for it.
