I think using csa and pedophilia in horror is something that can be done in horror effectively. This guy just doesnt do it right. You dont really hate the murderer when this revelation is revealed, you start to hate the author. Using csa as a shock factor and not in a way that effectively shows the horrors of child abuse is cruel and disgusting
@emojellyace8

This. This topics are really heavy to discuss in terms of horror. And just thinking about the idea of it is sick. So using these sensitive topics for shock value is just triggering and disrespectful at this point especially if it's not done "right" in terms of horror story telling. This analog horror has lots of potential. But the child murders (killing in general) was just too much and without the actual story it wouldn't make any sense making the audiences more turned off.

The Abstract Daddy of SH2 is the perfect example, it’s VERY obvious what the monster is supposed to represent and it’s fucking horrifying and deeply disturbing but the game and story takes what happened to Angela VERY seriously. Angela’s abuse is not used just to shock you for the sake of shock, it’s a sad part of her character and the reason she’s ended up in the town. A possibility supernatural serial killer committing unspeakable acts, leaving disturbing artwork as a calling card, and stumping the police is a good idea; it just needs to be packaged right. You could do so much with it: actual police reports, public safety announcements, news broadcasts, even handheld camera footage of someone encountering the killer. You don’t even need strong central characters; Local58 and Gemini Home Entertainment don’t really have any, and they’re possibly the best analog horror series to date. The problem with UrbanSpook is that it’s samey. There’s only so many times you can hear that the killer butchered someone in a gruesome way and left behind a disturbing painting before it gets repetitive. The real strength of analog horror as a genre is that it allows for inventive storytelling, and UrbanSPOOK isn’t taking advantage of that.

Thats honestly what pisses me off about The Painter. The idea of a serial killer that leaves disturbing artwork after they left the scene is a genuinely creepy and decent idea. It reminds of some some small real life examples of that in real life cases like how a couple SKs were found to have some artwork stashed away of their victims. Supposedly the Black Doodler that was never caught was a serial killer that artistically depicted his victims. The idea is a interesting one and could work but UrbanSlug did not focus on doing anything with a artistic serial killer evading the police, no instead he just focused on going into disturbing graphic detail in text on the deaths over and over again which got samey and monotonous really quickly even if you ignore the more controversial SA elements. I actually think not having much displayed text at all and what happened to the victims and just having the images being attached to a heavily censored police report would of sold the concept enough along with PSAs and maybe some camera footage. Your brain would fill the gaps in that something really awful happened to these people just by seeing the art alone of the aftermath. Also like, have a detective or a survivor that doesn't die in 5 seconds after they are introduced. I am not that big of a fan of Mandela Catalogue but at the very least the overarching story has some actual characters and not just a dispenser of horror in the killers and no characters to be seen.
@clinton8421
9 ай бұрын
What’s worse is that, because this guy did it, the story is now just gonna be this. You can’t copyright the idea of a serial killer leaving art of their victims behind, but good luck producing an analogue horror along these lines without starting some controversy.

The walten files has its own fair amount of gore, disturbing imagery and dead children. The difference is that twf isn’t dependent on it, nor is it the only thing the series has to offer. It uses these things to create a nightmarish and atmospheric situation, as well as giving us an engaging mystery and story full of characters we actually know and care about. Take bunnyfarm for example (this is my personal favorite episode), the story behind it is fucking terrifying the spirits of Sophie’s dead family are reaching out to her, forcing her to remember an event that she had repressed through pills and trauma. If you strip away the scares from Vita Carnis, you are left with the story of a slow alien invasion and the details of said invasion's ecology, which is still intriguing. The biggest issue with how UrbanSpook portrays CSA (outside of just directly making merchandise off of his CSA character) is that it adds to the very rampant problem in rape/CSA horror, that being that by using it for just shock value rather than to tell a story or a narrative, it paints rape/SA/CSA, which are two very real travesties that can lead to years upon years of trauma and pain, if not literally suicide, as though it is just a fictional concept. By essentially not taking matters such as rape, SA and CSA seriously and only adding it in to be like “LOOK! This female character in my horror story got RAPED! Isn’t that just so SCARRRYYYY!?!?!?!”, it paints that these real, legitimate crimes that happen to real life people are just fictionalized ideas that only exist to make people go “Wow, that’s really fucked up and spooky” and nothing else, rather than being able to sit down and think about how SA is actually horrifying and why you should sympathize with the victim because of their experience. This is also why it sucks that absolutely none of the characters in the story are written with any depth, and every character is basically just a NPC waiting to be made into some grossly graphic corpse. TL;DR: The reason it’s bad to only include rape/SA/CSA in your narrative if it’s only to shock the viewer is because it gives off the notion that you, as well as your audience, only view rape/SA/CSA as fictionalized concepts that can be used to disturb the audience and make you seem “hardcore” when all you’re actually doing is being super fucking disrespectful.

The number, if searched up online, would reveal that it's from New Orleans area, and was used during the early to late 2000s. So, while it doesn't tell us explicitly, it does show us through the number that it's set in Louisiana around 2001 to 2007.

Here's a question: Considering that these tapes would have been recorded between 2001 and 2007, why are they even tapes at all and not DVDs? While VHS tapes were technically still in use until 2008, the use of dvds started surpassing them as early as 2000. It makes sense for a series taking place in the late 70s to early 90s to use VHS, it was what was around and popular, but as made clear by the phone number in the first video this supposedly takes place between 2001-2007, when VHS tapes were declining in use and dying off. Call it a nitpick but I just think it adds on to the overall sloppiness of the project.
@malusclarion3527

@@braydentobin5150 I think the choice of it being on VHS is because that, although DVD is more widespread, I imagine that this police department is very small and is maybe a bit underfunded. Probably a good reason why there hasn't been a proper open investigation and more crackdowns in the area. They simply just don't have the amount of manpower. Although, it's weird that this case hasn't gone nationwide and alerted the attention of state authorities. I mean these two killers have already killed 38 people, and this is only the start of the series. I like urbanspook's content, but this is beginning to turn a bit unrealistic. By the time this series is over, the killers might've killed almost more than that of Gary Ridgway, who killed maybe 40-90 people in the Washington area and is considered the most dangerous serial killer in American History.

A problem I have with the series is it forgets an important part of horror: *Keep things hidden from the audience so their imagination can do all the work.* We're never left anything to the imagination with the murders, with the bodies having gotten autopsies and all the detail about what happened to them being very much clear. How would I improve it? They seldom or even *never* find the body. All they find is a person is missing, there are signs of struggle, some blood and other subtler clues at their house, but the person is nowhere to be found. Then they find the painting, and it's *very* telling in contents and title (that can still leave some details blank and up to the imagination to fill) I'm not a writing expert, but I think My version would make the watcher go: *A person is missing* "That can't be good" *Their house is empty, but there are some things in it that hint at something bad having happened* "Ok, I Know something bad has happened, but what exactly?" *The painting is found, and it's telling, with a title that confirms the suspicions* "....Oh....Oh NO..." The way things go in UrbanSPOOK is just: *A body is found and you're told first things what happened to it* "...Ew." *Painting telling us what we already know* "Ok yeah, It is what it looked like. Ew."

Things to fix the series: - Make the paintings have a more painterly feel than a digital one since they are done on canvas. - In contrast, the photos should look digital. - Make the slideshows look like actual police reports and other investigation stuffs (unless the slideshows in-universe weren't made by them). The slideshows should have a more formal or frozen register. - Even though there are legitimately detailed layers to the story, the creator is leaning and relying way too much on the shock factor. - What is the theme? All I've experienced so far is innocent people like us dying the most intimately disturbing deaths imaginable. What exactly am I learning from this? It can sometimes feel shocking for the sake of shocking, with the creator having nothing else to say. It can sometimes feel like these videos are just here to ruin my day and are a Net-negative on my life. Amazing disturbing stories like "Se7en" and "True Detective" have similarly shocking elements, but they both also have purpose and philosophies to share that don't make the day-ruining experience pointless, True Detective especially (I really resonate with that amazing tv series).

And with every content, there's a point in time where simply saying "this isn't my kind of content" isn't enough, that's where the criticisms, some are better and some are worse, comes in, and this often times clash with those who do like those contents. Me, personally, UrbanSpook is just majorly boring. It's just gorefest without any development in the story. Even 8BitRyan's reaction isn't enough to keep me engaged through the whole thing.

As someone who does enjoy the series, and as a writer, myself, I saw a lot of the issues early on as well, but I just really like the art and the soundtracks. To me, it seems like the story is by someone who has good ideas, but isn't skilled enough (as a writer) to make them happen yet. I see a lot of mistakes in my older work reflected in this series, and it honestly makes me feel a bit better about myself that I wasn't the only one that indulged in a more sadistic and cartoonish antagonist(s) than was absolutely necessary, simply for shock value. It's a shame that the creator is so unwelcoming to criticism. Most of my work is unpublished, (as it was either unfinished or scrapped), so I never got the chance in a lot of cases to have my work scrutinized by the public, but in the cases that I did, I majorly benefited from it.

This!!! I feel like most people are missing the point, it's not like his murderer is "too evil", he's just really bad at portraying him and tbh not really good at telling a story in general This guy could come up with the most gruesome murder and I will not find it scary because the execution is the same old shit, plus there isn't much build up in the first place Oh yeah and selling his black shirts with a fictional victims face slapped on it for 30 dollars is just laughable

Wendigoon attempted to watch it during a analog horror binge stream and had to turn it off after it got to the… horse part. Neither he or anyone one in his chat enjoyed it once it got to the just pure shock parts. That’s how I discovered the series and it’s just revolting, not even scary.

This is exactly the issue that the Arkham games had with their background lore unlockables, especially Arkham City - they just couldn't stop taking things too far, so the stories just failed to be shocking it was just "And then Calendar Man/Joker/Whoever murdered 50 children in ways that are vaguely related to their gimmick" and it just gets boring, especially because there are moments where they actually have fun ideas, like Calendar Man is planning a thing on Halloween because tradition, and the last line in his story is "Damn you, Scarecrow ;_;" which is pretty funny. It just gets spoiled by the dumb edgy stuff.

Urban Spook is like a slasher franchise. It’s starts out pretty scary but then as the sequels come out it starts to focus more and more on the gore and over the top deaths until eventually it’s not scary anymore, it’s just comical

Pretty sure thats what the entire point of the series is, provide shock value, leave the imagination to the viewers with nothing but a painting, and the jarring descriptions of course.

But Slasher sequels tend to know they're not to be taken seriously and are self aware This has 0 self awareness

@@Dec172giving a lengthy and detailed explanation of how the corpse was found isn't "leaving it to the imagination." A good example of that is in the HBO Chernobyl miniseries where you see most of the firefighters' radiation burns, but the one who had his face burnt the worst is never shown. You just see how the other characters react to it and you're left to imagine how it must look. Just thinking about that scene makes me feel queasy. UrbanSpooks blandly describing a corpse makes me feel bored and annoyed.

As an autistic person, I am dying of laughter while stimming at Urban's tweet. Like you can't really be offended by it because it reads like an edgy middle schooler trying way too hard to seem intimidating towards his peers. Also, does anyone else got a feeling that Urban has never seen an 11 year old in his life?

I hope he hasn't and never does, because I don't get the feeling it'd be good for anyone
