Apologies to my KZitem friends, subscribers and listeners who prefer opera and classical song but, rightly or wrongly, I have a very broad taste in music and these are a few examples of of my favourites from Gospel, Spirituals and Country Hymns that I hope you might enjoy.
The recordings on the video are as follows;
0:00 Pace Jubilee Singers : Stand by me (Charles Albert Tindley) Rec 1928
2:55 Paul Robeson : Steal away (Wallace Willis) Rec 1934
5:53 Carolina Gospel Singers : Beyond the river Rec 1927
8:39 Hank Williams : Farther along (WB Stevens) Rec 1951
The soloist in the Pace Jubilee Singers was called Hattie Parker but I don't know which of the ladies in the picture she is.
Wallace Willis, who wrote Steal Away, was a slave and it is thought that the words might not just be spiritual but might also refer to stealing away to freedom from the slave owners.
Hank Williams wrote quite a few country hymns and some well known hits including Jambalaya, Your Cheating Heart, Hey Good Looking and I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. When he recorded Farther Along for a radio show in 1951 he didn't know that his own "farther along" was just around the corner. He had fused vertebrae in his spine that gave him tremendous pain and to ease this he was prescribed (by a doctor who was later proved to have false credentials) a drug called Chloral Hydrate. This eventually took it's toll on Hank's heart and he died in the back seat of a car while being driven to perform in a concert on New Years Day1953 in Canton, Ohio. He was just 29 years of age.
