Old-Time TOTW #305 is Cora Dye from the playing of James "Jim" Reed (3 August 1902--16 January 1985). He was the son of John Franklin Reed (1855-1929) and Florence Ida Lampley (1870-1964). He was born in Hamilton, IL, and died in Benton, IL. He married Roxie Duckworth (1908-1996) on 18 August 1927. Reed worked as a farmer. Source for above information: Ancestry and public documents.
The tune is found in the book Dear Old Illinois by Garry Harrison and Jo Burgess, and was recorded from the playing of Jim Reed by Harrison on 14 June 1972.
Garry Lee Harrison (16 August 1954--4 September 2012) was born in Charleston, Coles County, IN and died in Bloomington, Monroe County, IL. He was the son of Clifford Otto "Catfish Otto" Harrison (1904-1974) and Pauline Edna Mason (1916-1998). Garry learned to play fiddle in his teens from his father. He also taught himself to build fiddles and other stringed instruments. He collected and restored many zithers and autoharps and donated them to the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix Arizona.
In the 1970s, Garry began collecting and recording fiddlers in Illinois. Those recordings are housed in the Library of Congress and are included in the book he co-authored with Jo Burgess, Dear Old Illinois: Traditional Music of DOwnstate Illinois.
Garry played fiddle with the New Mules along with his daughter Genevieve on fiddle and her husband Smith Koester on banjo. They received a blue ribbon at Clifftop's traditional string band contest in 2008.
Harrison wrote many original fiddle tunes in the old-time style, many of which he recorded.
Regarding the tune, Harrison stated that it was learned by Jim Reed "by its namesake, a Benton area musician who was said to have played it on the guitar."
The A part shows similarities to "Been to the East, Been to the West," and the B part is nearly identical to "Going Back to Chattanooga." • Going Back to Chattanooga
Many thanks to Cody McManus for directing me to the tune "Going Back to Chattanooga."
Gael Hayat informed me that Old Sage Friend from Lusk, Gribble, and York is the same tune (with a slightly abbreviated A part).
Joining me are friends Guy Tanczos on fiddle (Parma, OH), Stephen Rapp and Marc Harris on banjo (Kent, OH, and Cincinnati, OH, respectively), and Michael Seiser on guitar (Cleveland, OH).
Paul Kirk has been playing bowed string instruments since 1980 and has been teaching them privately, in classroom settings, and in workshop formats since 1988. He studied music theory, composition, music education, music history, and musicology at Cleveland State University. While at CSU, Paul played violas da gamba, krummhorns, and recorders in early music ensembles. He was a founding member of Good Company: A Vocal Ensemble and has founded many of his own bands over the years including A Hundred Thousand Welcomes Celtic Ensemble, Knives and Forks English Country Dance Ensemble, and Down the Road Old-Time String Band. He has composed over 500 folk tunes in a variety of styles.
Paul has closely studied the music from Appalachia, the history of American old-time fiddling, source fiddlers, as well as the social aspects of the music. Since July 1, 2018, he has been creating and sharing videos each Sunday through his Old-Time Tune of the Week series on KZitem. Paul puts a great focus on fiddle bowing patterns and techniques and has devised practical methods for teaching with excellent results. One of his specialties is teaching old-time fiddle to crossover students, especially those coming from a background in classical violin and other musical traditions.
