Re-tests every 5-10 years should be there for everyone, even if they're not as comprehensive as a full test. Medical checks should be every few years as well - it's not just the elderly who's eyesight can suffer. It's just common sense.

I noticed my eyesight reducing a little in early lockdown. Due to risk to my family, I waited until I was double jabbed to get the test done. I felt my eyesight was sub-optimal and was appalled to learn I was well within the legal requirment. In fact I could have been twice that bad and still been legal. The optician was surprised that I wasn't relieved, and I was to be legal, but wasn't at how bad legal can be. The idea of people below the limit on the road is genuinely terrifying. People saying they don't notice their eyesight is failing are lying, pure and simple. I noticed having to use the magnifier app to read some small print etc. I was sure I could manage before. That is part of normal life so it is noticeable.

In aviation (at least where I am in the United States and I would imagine most other countries are similar) they have a biannual flight review which is required by law. There is also a medical that is required the frequency of which depends on age and class (higher classes of medical such as those for a commercial pilots license and pilots over 40 years of age are more frequent than the hobbyist private pilot). I don’t know why something similar doesn’t exist for driving licenses it’s quite strange when you think about it

In New Jersey if you're 65+ and have a moving traffic violation or an accident you get referred to the Motor Vehicle Commission for an evaluation. They basically test vision, hearing, and then a short road test. It has actually lowered insurance rates across the board for all drivers in the state. A good thing for a state with one of the highest insurance premiums in the country. Personally, as a younger person I believe this scheme can be quite arbitrary.

The biggest problem with older people I find in the fact that they can't see so good, they go slowly as a result, slowing the traffic down, maybe forcing drivers into stupid and desperate overtaking manouvers. Also they can miss a car coming from main road and so on...suprisingly, they don't forget to give a turn signal on roundabouts, as they are used to give it anyway.

So 26 years on has anything actually been done about this? Is there anything in place to catch people (of any age) with failing eyesight or other conditions that may make them unsafe to drive? For me it's a matter of health and fitness, not age per say. I'm not sure mandatory retest are necessarily the way to go but equally it shouldn't be left to people to self-report everything.

The advent of rear and side view cameras on newer cars, at least in the US, has improved that ability of everyone, but especially older drivers, to have better situational awareness. In my state, I have to renew my license every five years, and that includes eyesight testing. The idea of lifetime licenses is insane, regardless of the driver's age. I'm about to turn 73. I don't need glasses to drive or use the computer. I am deaf in one ear so I pay attention to lights coming from the rear or sides in case it's an emergency vehicle. I'm probably not typical since I was a police officer for 27 years and have had considerable pursuit driving training. Still, I know my reflexes aren't what they were 35 years ago. I pay attention more, I don't talk on my cell phone while moving, and my GPS screen is mounted directly in my view. I don't know the situation in the UK but we could stop a driver that was not driving well. If they were elderly, we could refer them to the DMV for a license review. The DMV would not only retest them but also contact relatives for their input about their driving habits. If it was clear the driver didn't have the skill, his license was revoked. This should be a last resort since we are then condemning the a life of isolation, not even being able to drive the grocery store or pharmacy. Maybe a restricted license to only city streets in their own town is the answer.
@TXnine7nine

In the US licensing is done state by state so there would never be a blanket policy in place across the country but I could see incentives for elderly drivers to “volunteer” to be retested (medical and road test) annually or biannually in exchange for reduced or free registration costs and insurance. And if they fail and can no longer drive then some sort of tax break or other financial annuity could be paid out. This would be necessary because if people know they would fail a medical test then they would have no incentive to volunteer in the first place and they continue on driving as before. It would have to be a voluntary program because while driving is actually a privilege and not a right, it is treated like it’s a right in the US (where public transport in most places is far from adequate).

As an ancient Brit living in the Japan Alps, to retain my Japanese Driving Licence, I am retested every three years. If the Japanese authority were to allow Uber or Grab taxis I would be more than willing to give up driving. If I could no longer legally drive, I would have to relocate, either to urban/suburban Japan, or to another country that has Uber/Grab taxis. Malaysia and Cambodia are in the frame; I've already made several exploratory visits. So if I had to fly the Japan coop, I would no longer be paying Japanese tax. So many people have no interest in driving and even at their best were only borderline competent. So by the time they reach 60 let alone 80, have reactions like a dead rat and are accidents going somewhere to happen. I did five years of rally driving in my mid twenties so even with natural deterioration, I can hold my own with young drivers. Reaction speed, hard to get below 0.4 seconds, but you're right about eyesight, that's the Achilles heel. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit

As someone approaching the 55 age they are referring to at the start of this video I am 100% behind retesting. There is only one issue, and that is the availability of tests currently, something I know because my son took his test last year and waiting lists are already a joke. Long post, because it's a big topic. Don't like them, don't read it. If you do and have corrections, thoughts, please let me know. I always reserve the right to be wrong, it helps me learn. Some myths positive and negative about getting older. Eyesight fades, and you are more likely to become long and short sighted simultaneously. This can be combatted easily with prescription lenses, but people need to accept they are needed. I have contacts for distance and old man specs for reading and computer work. Reactions are slower. This is health based more than age, but you are more likely to be less healthy as you get older if you don't take care of yourself. I train a lot and am shocked how many 10 years younger have what I consideer insufficient reaction speed. Experience vs complacence. The number of people presuming they are better because they have been driving for x number of years is absurd. Even Jasper Carrot eluded to how easily you form bad habits. It was educational to find out what my son was being taught and how driving standards have changed since I sat my test. I would say all of us need to be aware of where we need to improve and continuously aim to improve. Self-reporting. This one I feel very strongly about. I have symptomatic epilepsy, caused by brain damage resulting from being hit by someone driving on a mobile phone. It took over a decade before I had a seizure which was noticed. At A&E I was told I wasn't epileptic and advised not to drive. Months later I was told by a neurologist that I was epilepitc, the test in A&E picks up birth epilepsy. I was told I should voluntarily surrender my licence, this couldn't be enforced but if I had an accident knowing this, I could face prosecution. The consultant's face when I said I had already stopped driving was disbelief, then surprise when he realised I was being honest. I was told the time you lose the licence for is a year. I didn't re-apply until over 2.5 years when I was absolutely certain my seizures are sleep only, deep sleep at that. By sheer fluke there had been a change a month or so before this making sleep seizure epilepsy an automatic return, because by the time the epilepsy becomes an issue I would already have crashed due to falling asleep, same as anyone else asleep behind the wheel. Following this I booked a set of lessons to ensure I would be safe on the road. I remember being furious when I was younger that people imprisoned for death by dangerous driving often leave jail with a full licence, with no mandatory training or test. I wasn't going to be a hazzard on the road, so paid to get some training and asked the instructor to assess me. I don't just say this, I have lived it. Losing my licence was a pain, but it was better than dying or killing due to stupidity. Process is something that needs thought. When I was younger provisional motorbike licences had a limited lifespan, if you didn't pass in that time you lost the licence. I think driving licenses should have a similar system, it expires at a set age, and you have a couple of years before that in which to prove you are still safe to drive. When the licence is replaced, you get it back with a new age limit. There is a huge problem with this at the moment. Availability of tests is ridiculous now. If you check this on DVSA site, you will see it can take months to get a test. Adding the additional load will mean needing additional examiners, possibly even more centres, an investment our goveernment are unwilling to make with the current workload, let alone with more. So we need a government who care about our lives. This could be subbed out. Back to motorbike comparison, there is a CBT which is required before people are allowed to ride a bike with L plates. If the test is made in such a way that private organisations could assess it as is done with the CBT, it would make more jobs, and the roads safer at the same time. What would happen to those failing needs to be considered too. I gave a few year block deliberately to allow people to fail, then improve and pass. If they fail in a way that makes them an immediate danger, should this be allowed? If someone comes in legally blind, the centre should remove their licence immediately obviously. But what if there is a single error on the road where it is ambiguous and could be considered a one off, but is still dangerous. Should the person lose their licence, have it dropped to provisional, or simply be given time to improve for their test. If someone runs out of time because DVSA have joined the strike fest. Should the licence be extended if they have already failed their most recent? They are not to blame for lack of test availability, but could be a deadly hazard. The below is an edit I forgot to add. Above is as I originally typed it. Insurance companies are already increasing premiums for older drivers, especially mid-life crisis car drivers. I would rather sit an additional few tests than be charged more because others are less responsible. The cost of the tests should be countered by the reducing insurance price as the higher risk are removed from higher age groups. I also like learning what I am doing wrong so I can improve. So for me there is no negative that outwieghs the positives.

Some jurisdictions have stricter testing to keep driving privileges. That includes after lengthy enough periods of disqualification or after reaching a certain age. In some cases, a cop can require a driver to resit a driving test because of the abysmal performance of a manoeuvre. A 2014 People Behaving Badly segment, on San Francisco-based KRON4 News, titled "People Behaving Badly More Cops, More Stops" features an elderly driver who pulls over for a traffic stop but whose vehicle scrapes up so much against some grass that the rims on the passenger side get grass within them. The cop orders the driver to go back to a test centre run by the Department of Motor Vehicles of California, the state that issued that driver his licence. It is unclear if that driver is still on the road.

This 100%. I think the biggest problem on roads isn't so much elderly people, its people just not bothering to keep up to date with the rules of the road or just forgetting those they did learn as they slide into bad habits. Obviously the longer you've been driving, the more severe this is too, but I think that a voluntary scheme where you retake your theory test every 2-5 years with potentially even the option for a practical test or so would help a lot. Perhaps pair the scheme with decent discounts on insurance for passing it as an incentive to do it.

He had motorcycle, car, and HGV licence. They had someone driving the company bus so he didn't get a PSV. No test ever, In fairness this person was actually a good driver and sensible enough to take the risks of eyesight, vehicle maintenance etc. sereiously. But the idea of people like him on the road completely untrained was terrifying.

This seems like a totally biased piece LOL. They didn't even interview or get the thoughts of ACTUAL old-aged drivers at all!

Actually they're safe and control traffic flow efficiently, what would be better would be to teach people how to use and navigate them properly!

Get rid of the license, get rid of public roads and let the free market decide what to do.

Driving a car is the only way country folk can go to the Drs, the shops, imagine the kayos, hundreds of old people need some way to get to a given destination , will you take them. or are you a me person.

Briddy Hll The overwhelming majority of the UK's population live in urban areas over 82% in 2015. Usually only rich entitled toffs live in the countryside with there holiday home's, so your argument is invalid. That aside not all bad drivers are old people, but everyone has ensure they are physically fit to drive.

"Usually only rich entitled toffs live in the countryside with there holiday home's" well that's patently nonsense, but there we go.

After having only just passed my driving test in year 13, I survived my entire life without a car, yet I still had to go to school everyday. If you're not capable of passing a driving test, you shouldn't have a license.

Wonder what clarkson would have to say on this now. He’s definitely got more racist as he’s got older
