Thanks for your honest opinion. I bought the 2019 Predator a couple of years ago and I still love it. I was wondering if I could have saved some dough though by waiting after the new Predator came out for 2500 and this one for 2k. Thanks to your report, I'm very happy to have the one I have. The seat is extremely comfortable, the rudder works fine and the extra size, are great. I guy from Australia in a video on youtube was using one in the ocean, so they must be salt water worthy, I figured cool. I've had it out in some white cap situations, it preformed very well. I bought a cheap Magellan cart 40bucks and although it didn't fit the kayak all that well, it managed, however it did excel using it as a roller on top of my trunk to load the yak onto the modified car top carriers on my honda accord. Recently I bought a wider track Magellan with fat wide hard plastic wheels, longer straps and it's a breeze hauling it around by hand now. I'll probably add some floats of some kind to the straps and it will be perfect for my use. Thanks for all your videos. I like your no bullshit approach ! I shit you not.

Excellent review, the plastic pdl bracket is a deal breaker for me. The magic number for off shore is 13. A 13.5 vs 12 just clears waves better regardless of brand . I’m going with the predator thx

Well, sad day...for me. I was 85% leaning toward getting this one, but you mentioned two of the most important issues for me. One being transporting. The handles seemed to be in awkward positions and placement plus I didn't think my cart would work for this either because of the haul design. Also the seat (enough said). The second thing, as you said, I need something that can be equally versatile in-shore and offshore. Didnt know about the plastic shaft thing either. Thanks Nic, back to the drawing board! I do like the color scheme though.

Nice video. Now that it's been around a few years, do you see much of a disadvantage getting this vs. the current Sportsman PDL? I'm aware of the seat and rear handle differences. I had my heard set on a new Sportsman PDL 120 next year mainly for lake fishing, but I may have found a deal too good to pass up on a couple year old model of the Topwater PDL 120.

My concern would be the warranty on the pedal drive. Lots of people have found “good deals” recently just to have major drive issues down the road an no warranty.

Great review mate, you've given me quite a bit to think about. I was considering picking one of these up but a number of the issues you've mentioned have me reconsidering. The move to a predator/bigwater 132 would be a no brainer but the price difference here in Australia is around $1500 AUD. The extra weight and size is something to think about too.

Hey Nick, I’m 5”7 150lbs. Mainly fish lake mead in Nevada. Will be car topping for a lil while till I get a truck. Thinking of going 106pdl but am mixed about getting the 120 because people are saying I need it because lake mead is big. Don’t take a bunch of gear out either but like the idea of putting a nk 180 on it later. What do you think? Love the videos
@NavarreKayakFishing
2 ай бұрын
I would go with the 120. The extra length will make car topping a bit easier. Sounds crazy but hear me out - the shorter kayak will be loaded at a steeper angle than the longer kayak. You have to lift the front end no matter what - once the front end is up its easier to lift the longer kayak without worrying about the front end falling off of the car because of the steep angle. Just my experience though. The 120 will also perform better on the water.

I bought the non pedal 120 last year and I absolutely love it. It works well in lakes and rivers. Perfectly maneuverable in light to moderate whitewater. I thought the seat was extremely comfortable and never really had any issues with it. The only issues I really have with mine are the rear handle and the fact that there is no rear hull access. I wonder what all they changed for this year that made it so much different?

Again thanks for thw review. I am based in Scotland where the weather changes very quickly. I plan to purchase a kayak this year to use offshore. Based on your review, and the rounded nose, I wonder if the Topwater might be best suited for more moving water, creeks and rivers, except for the flat bottom. I agree, I'm not sure what their intent was. I've also noticed a lot of kayak manufacturers seem to be trying to lower price points by going with cheap seats. The place owners spend hours upon hours. @NavarreKayakFishing

Both kayaks are stable. You will just have to get use to the hull. The Sportsman 120 is harder to flip because of its hull design but it’s also slower. I would demo both if possible. The BigWater will perform better on large bodies of water.

An honest opinion is what we all should be looking for...including the manufacturers! I was thinking about getting one of these as a second kayak to my Predator but I had the same thoughts you had, and I hadn't even demo'd one. I just looked at them. I am sure they are still a great product but I am in the same boat (pun intended) as you with where I fish and I want something just a bit bigger, faster, easier to pedal. A question though, did the new pedal system in the Predator change the arm to plastic as well? I though they were the same and interchangeable. I have the 2018 model and haven't looked at the new drives on the Predators. Thanks Nick! --Brent
@NavarreKayakFishing

Hey, Brent. The drives are not interchangeable. The storage compartment is a different size and wouldn’t fit correctly. I checked the 2020’s at the store and the Predator series were all solid metal. I’m not sure why the Topwater series is plastic.

JD, for some reason this question was in the spam folder of YT comments. Te C-Tug wheels would hit the hull because of how flat the hull is and your couldn't put the wheels towards the center of the kayak to support the weight.

Im close to buying this one for use in rivers, "slow/medium" streams. Considering how the hull is constructed, with a flat stern,- Do you have any negative/postitive experience with paddling/moving backwards with it (positioning before anchoring up close to fish)? Any thoughts on how it will behave if anchoring it from the stern in moving water? I have fished from kayaks for around 15 years, but this will (maybe) be my first sit-on-top kayak - and i have no experience with it.

Pistole, we didn’t spend any time with it in a stream so my experience is limited. We spent time with it in some pretty decent current though and I don’t see any issues while anchoring from stern in moving water. It all comes down to preference though. I would try to find someone locally who already owns one and invite them out on a trip. The other option would be renting or demoing.
