Those old bars had no snap or whip to them. They looked way more stiff. Now I want to see what a modern gymnast can do with an old style bar

It had a lot more give than the stiff bars used by calisthenics and freerun athletes these days and they can do a lot more on it. So they just were not very good back in the day

They also didn't have access to same level of healthcare and medicine. Imagine coming off that bar with no crash mat, having a protruding fracture and no penicillin! Not to mention the funding. It's easier to take risks and develop through risk taking, if the consequences are less likely to be severe ❤

Every once in a while there’s a moment in sports like the Fosbury flop that just instantly catapults the sport forward. This video makes me think that somewhere in much more recent than I was expecting gymnastics history some guy blew everyone away by _letting go of the bar._

Yes! Of course there's changes in equipment (eg new construction materials that can take more of a beating etc) but also over time people try out new things. New skills get added to the books (which then leads to more people trying them) and other less safe stuff gets banned or stuff just goes out of fashion. The reason they look less skilled is beefcake no one thought of doing it like that before. Imagine high jump without the fosbury flop!

It makes sense 1930s gymnastics was so limited in moves because a new move gets added to the rulebook when someone successfully lands it in international competitions.

New gymnasts would absolutely crush it on old equipment. Their technique and training is just a lot more advanced. Even I could do a routine twice as difficult as the one in the video on the old bar

@@myleneh1916 It's about technique and knowledge of skills and training. The old tumblers barely did anything, but now people do triple twists, full-twisting double backs and harder skills on concrete and grass. The equipment wasn't the issue.

The equipment used is totally different not the flexibility of the modern bar compared to the old. Also most top fight athletes are full time professional where as in the old film they were mostly part time self financing armatures

When did the Olympics get rid of the ban on professional competitors? I remember back in the eighties it was a big deal when a big athlete turned professional because it meant they couldn't compete in the Olympics any more. I remember when Torvill and Dean went pro. Everyone was gutted!

oh, that is just called "lifetime worth of hard work"☺️ i assure you, if u would just get out of your fucking bed, and just tried to achieve something through good ol' hard work, u will also be able to eat and drink from that beautiful fruit, that emerged from your blood, sweat and tears. tl;dr: just do smth and u will also achieve smth. just because u cant do smth doesnt mean u can just go and insult someone's hard work with a word "talent". i believe in u, I know that u r also capable of doing smth great. stop wasting your time and just do it. believe me, this is _that_ easy

Expressing admiration for someone really hardworking and talented is fine and doesn't invite random attacks on your character. Ps I train a bunch and am very bottom heavy bc of genetics, swinging on the bar IS genuinely challenging even for someone fit

Probably not nearly as much unless the equipment changes drastically. Most of the "more difficult/risky moves" have already been banned for safety reasons
