Didn't you see the part after the second wave of guys where he's out of breath and even vomits. Then he does get overpowered for a little while.

I do like the camerawork and there are a few bits I like, for example him throwing up in the middle or the bit where he straight up throws the bat at the guy running towards him. Plus, Brolin does have a certain presence and physicality. But the choerography could have been better, the music isn't very good (even though Roque Banos is a great composer who's done a terrific job with other movies and the sound effects just take away any seriousness the scene is going for)

The comments here are completely missing the point. This is NOT the final Spike Lee cut scene, so the sound is not complete, which explains why it does not hear so well. This is an example of Spike Lee could have done if he were allowed to have his final 3 hour edit rather than the studio intefering. Lee's genius directing and camerawork was well before John Wick. Don't forget Spike Lee is a veteran film maker. He made Malcolm X for god's sake! So the idiots commenting here, show some phucking respect!

Something isn't mentioned a lot when talking about this bad remake is how unnecessarily high the body count is. In the original, Oh Dae-su is only shown killing TWO people in the whole movie, the two guys in the condo before the climactic scene. He gave the bodyguard a probably fatal injury but ultimately didn't kill him either. At the very start of the hallway fight he actually DROPS a knife he was already holding and switches to his hammer/fists, he was not trying to kill anyone and ultimately no one dies in the whole fight. Neither were the thugs trying to kill him, stabbing him is clearly an act of desperation. This kind of low fatality violence is really common in Japanese & Korean crime media, because 1) there is less of a gun culture and 2) gang culture in east asia (and in fact most places that aren't the US) often revolves around brawls rather than hits. In the context of Park Chan-Wook's film this helps to ground Oldboy in a cinematic and cultural context. I don't know why they chose to make Joe Ducett a bare handed killing machine in this film. Changes in remakes should be approached with the mindset of "how does this affect the meaning & experience of the film"... what does having Brolin brain random thugs (sorry Rami) with a hammer and gore them with swords add to the movie? Where is the cultural and cinematic context for this? Was Lee going for a hyperviolent martial arts B-movie vibe a la Kill Bill? That would actually be a fun (although derivative) approach but the rest of the movie does not fit into this tonally or visually. Or is it like a Death Wish style American revenge melodrama? If so, why don't guns play a heavier role in the film, as they do with the rest of that genre (which for better or worse are essentially neo-Westerns reflecting a uniquely American fetish of the lone wolf gunman)? Did Lee just try to go for one or both of these and fail? I don't know, but it doesn't work, whatever it is.

What's with the Daft sound effects, the acrobatics, the dust power on there clothes, the camera man who thinks he is clever by panning everywhere, the cheap emotionless music with the feral drums hammering away, the filter to make everything look green, fuck. Just everything about this scene pales as insignificant compared to the original. The original was direct. Simple. And effective. He had a hammer, as though it were a priest with a cross. The music was heart rending.. you FELT for him. The sound effects were just zoom recorded, & the camera only moved when necessary. This is everything that is wrong with film today. TERRIBLE.

What made the originals hallway fight so good was how realistic it was. The main character does not come out unscathed, he gets the shit kicked out of him, and you see that reflected in the acting, he has to stop to catch his breath, he misses his swings and punches, he has to force himself to crawl away from the henchmen. This recreation has practically none of that. Plus the sound design is fucking awful in general, without even comparing it to the original.
