I feel bad for the caddie, but, when you take on that role you’d better know the rules. When I saw him jump into the bunker I thought, big mistake, what the heck are you even doing in that trap? Then when he reached down I knew it was all over. Even if there was any doubt, wait outside the hazard and let the player go in and investigate. Better to err on the side of caution than hurt your player. Would a caddie brush away twigs from the player’s ball in the rough? No! You don’t physically interfere with the player’s game. You only give advice and rake the trap after he hits. You don’t mark his ball on the green, then clean it. You let the player mark the ball and give it to you to clean. A caddie has to know where his role ends. And the sad kicker to this is that he had a perfect lie on the sand, almost tee’d up. Also, the player stepped into the sand trap and could feel it under his feet, so he already had an idea of the density, making the caddy’s move unnecessary and pointless.

@OldWorkingMan

The reason that you can't touch the sand in a bunker is because you hit it into a penalty area. If you want to touch the dirt and move it around and swing your club through it to get a feel for it or find out how wet or dry or soft or hard the sand is THEN DON'T HIT YOUR BALL INTO A PENALTY AREA. In this situation 'Penalty Area' means you are being penalized for hitting your ball there so you should try not to hit your ball into a penalty area. In other words = it is advantageous to you, as a golfer, not to hit your ball into a penalty area. THAT'S WHY IT IS A RULE.

@@Taydrum I commented that not everyone who plays golf knows this rule. In my mind there’s a subtle but very important distinction between an individual who plays golf and a “golfer”. In my opinion a golfer is someone who is seriously committed to the game, who knows the rules and plays by them. This is someone who reads the rules published by the USGA/R&A, and who makes it a point to remain informed on rule changes so he’s compliant. It’s like the difference between a guy who owns a real nice power miter saw and a true carpenter. A true carpenter knows what he’s trying to do with the miter saw, the right way to use it, and how to never use it. Your average weekend warrior might have a nice miter saw but beyond making a few simple angle cuts with it, doesn’t really know very much about what he’s doing. But if he wants to become highly proficient, he’ll invest time and effort in learning about the right ways and wrong ways of using it. When casual players invest in learning the rules, which are readily available on-line and in print BTW, or by learning from those who know, they begin to move from casual player to “golfer”. Here’s a link to the Rules of Golf: www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules/rules-2019/rules-of-golf/rules-and-interpretations.html#!ruletype=pe§ion=rule&rulenum=1. BTW, it’s also a violation of the rules to bend over and feel the putting surface too with the intention of learning if it is fast or slow, wet or dry, etc. Those who over time become proficient though learn how to read greens and won’t need to violate the rules to access conditions. Skills and awareness improve over time if one seriously applies himself. Those who don’t apply themselves seriously, who don’t seek more knowledge and greater proficiency aren’t really golfers IMO, and aren’t really playing golf. They’ might be out there trying to get the ball in the hole, but they aren’t really playing golf because they aren’t playing by the rules and they don’t actually know and adhere to etiquette.

He isn't a PGA pro. This was the USGA armature, the caddies work at Bandon Dunes and while they are professional caddies in a sense they get paid to caddy, they are not PGA professional caddies. I played at Bandon Dunes a few months ago and they are very laid back bunch of guys and I think he just had a brain fart and forgot that he wasn't caddying for a normal group at Bandon Dunes. If any of you go to Bandon Dunes hire a caddy they're awesome and will improve your game, mine helped me break 100 for the first time ever on my last day on Sheeps Ranch.

Just my opinion: Changing the PIN Rule was stupid. Every time I see it I cringe, haha smh I don't get it....
