The two biggest reasons why this film was so overlooked: 1. It came out at the end of Disney’s Bronze Age, right before the Renaissance. 2. It came out the same weekend as The Land Before Time.

Depends who you’re talking to. Quite a lot of people consider Great Mouse Detective (1986) to be the start of the Disney Renaissance; whole other’s believe Little Mermaid (1989) to be the start. There’s a documentary on Disney+ about the Renaissance - Waking Sleeping Beauty - which includes Mouse Detective and Oliver and Company as part of the Renaissance period

I also saw both Land before time (First time to that was on a field trip[)and Oliver 3 times each in theaters even Oliver for the third time on New Year's day 1989 in omaha when i was 6 and had merchandise to both. Oliver made lots of money in theaters and a surprise hit! but too bad it never had a video release for 8 years until 1996. I even saw Roger about 3 times in theaters in 88 even Bambi 88 re-issue 2 times, Fox and Hound 88 re-issue 2 times as well. I even saw Rescuers 3 times in it's 89 re-issue at age 7 even Peter Pan 2 times and Little Mermaid 2 times. I'm definitely an 80s/early 90s kid who have fond memories of those movies

This song hits something deep within me, to the point where I cry uncontrollably. I don’t recall crying to this as a child, but it does as an adult. I think because I look back at my childhood and really relate to Oliver. I think we have all been where Oliver was: young, wishful, and hopeful, just to have life be harsh and critical. This song brings back those thoughts and feelings I had as a kid, and making me really wish I had them back, but they got lost to life. And at the same time, the song encourages me to keep going and to keep those dreams alive. “Dreamin’ is still how the strong survive.” Thank you to everyone who help create and protect this song.

I used to watch this movie with and sing the songs to my cat, who passed a few years back, and many years too soon. This song along with the Jenny number are so heart wrenching for me to hear again, but... It makes me feel like my best buddy is here again. We grew up together for 11 years, and he should still actually be here, but.. our neighbor's car had other plans, apparently.. Miss you, buddy.. We'll always be good company.

I was born in 1984. Now for me the 90's held most of my childhood memories as the first 5 years of my life is fuzzy or lost. However this movie is the very first movie I can hazily recall seeing in the theaters. I don't know if it was my first cinema and disney movie I ever saw but it's the one I can recall that i saw. The late 80's stuff I can recall: This movie, The Little Mermaid, a soundtrack from Walt Disney World Resort called "The Music of Disneyland, Walt Disney World and EPCOT Center", and the beginnings of the wonderful "The Disney Afternoon" block and Disney Adventures Magazine and comics.

Great song!! It got stuck in my head as a kid. I then watched the credits as a teenager and was so thrilled to see that Howard Ashman wrote this song! You can really tell this movie paved the way for the comeback of the animated musical. It’s a great soundtrack!

The first lyrics Howard Ashman wrote for Disney. From here he would bring in Alan Menken to work on Little Mermaid. He also pitched Aladdin as an animated musical asr well as some of it's songs before being brought in with Alan to rescue the floundering non musical production of Beauty and the Beast...

For pitching Aladdin as an animated musical, it is sad to know he didn't see it come to fruition, much like Walt himself didn't see the end product of "The Jungle Book." I know, as on the end credits of "Beauty and the Beast" (at least my special edition copy, not sure if it was on the original VHS release) "To the man who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul, we will be forever grateful." - Howard Ashman, 1950 - 1991.

I just turned 37 and i remembered 31 years ago, i was 6 when i saw this movie in theaters 3 times when i lived in Omaha even after New Years day and dug the movie and i had merchandise like 2 shirts, PJs, the CD soundtrack (my first CD and got it for Christmas that year), Mcdonald toys, Mcdonald ornuments, coloring books, junior novel, plush Oliver and all that. I remembered feeling disappointed it never came out on video for years as i wanted it the next year on video but i also saw the re-issue in theaters in middle school and remembered my friends who also remembered seeing the movie when it first came out too as they too were pissed it never hit video and got the VHS for christmas when it came out and now have it on blu-ray as i enjoy it for the nostalgia. I also remembered seeing Great Mouse Detective when it originally came out when i was 4 when i lived in St Louis 3 times and also saw the re-issues of classic Disney animated films even 1987'ss re-issues of Aristocats to Fox and the Hound 88 re-issue, i even saw Roger Rabbit in theaters in Omaha and also saw Rescuers 89 re-issue and Little Mermaid 2 times when i was 7 plus had Mcdonald toys. Yet Black Cauldron was the first movie i saw in theaters at age 3. One of my favorite Disney animated movies and still enjoy it as an adult as i got it on blu-ray, i can't wait to meet Joey Lawrence in person at the Santa Fe Comic Con this october and get his autograph on my Oliver blu and a photo with him.
