I did an "Oliver" impression once at my school at lunch: the students' dining hall had run out of food and a lot of us kids wanted seconds. Let's make a short time-travel to the glorious olden days - notably amid the pinnacle of the grandiose musical-film genre - so as to illuminate and to ruminate one of the most shimmering and staggering musical film classics ever held dear highly in the Hollywood cinema history. It's none other than Sir Carol Reed's expertly-delineated well-fashioned motion picture version of Mr Lionel Bart's best-loved smash stage-musical "Oliver!" in virtue of Mr Vernon Harris' handily low-keyed yet prettily tuned-up screenplay without debasing-and-dispraising Mr Charles Dickens' major literary work of art. There's no doubt that this epic motion picture has stood the test of time - in some ways it's antiquated and unsophisticated but still its good looks; its mass appeal; its resilient musical numbers; its relevant social theme; its leading-and-supporting stars' crowning performances; its point-by-point graphic designs; its well-effected climactic moments; and its well laid-out step designs will definitely jubilate and titillate all the classic film aficionados up to the hilt time after time. This musical sequence ( featuring Mr Mark Lester's hung-up low-pitched utterance of the iconic line "Please sir, I want some more." with upward-held bowl in his hands ) is truly done with adequacy, consistency, and poignancy. So as to come up and to spice up this high point with something quite much more life-giving and moving and audience-raving it has the incredibly-recreated detailed setting of the 19th-century English workhouse and the indelibly-consummated performances and the indisputably-inspirited voices of Sir Harry Secombe and Ms Peggy Mount - to boot. For real this changeless and peerless gem will conquer our hearts from the start and will put us all under its magic spell. In all respects it's simply defining, freshening, and glistening.

Also during Oliver's punishment while they are trying to find someone to take Oliver, while he is being repeatedly beaten, deprived of food, and kept in solitary confinement, Dickens writes that if Oliver had a handkerchief he would have used it to kill himself.

That moment at the end when he realised who named him is priceless.

I wonder if the director was trying to imply those running the workhouse had forgotten their own message "God is Love" (if they ever took it properly to begin with)

God isn't love. Clearly a message fascists left behind

I remember wanting to see the movie so badly since everyone I knew had already seen it. We had the album and I would listen to it all the time and I would constantly ask my neighbour friend about it. Finally finallly my parents took us to see it and I was so happy and excited.

It's brilliant but also sad to think children were treated so badly.

"They will lay the blame on the one who named him 'Oliver'!" Doesn't that mean they'll blame Mr. Bumble?

An old yellow Tom cat has taken up at my house. I put out a can of food for my grey cat and yellow cat gobbled it up like he was starved to death (tried to lick the white enamel off the can!) I gave him the name right then: Oliver! I sing this to him while he's scarfing down his "gruel" and he knows what he is called now.

I was in the orchestra for FC's play...the cast was very good, and now I love the songs from "Oliver!" And yes, that was one of the best scenes...kudos to Bumble (I think his name was Matt), and the two Oliver actors.

is this song some form of taunting to taunt Oliver? I am curious I really would like to know the answer to that
