Oliver Reed was a remarkable man, in so many ways. I really admire that he was true to himself always, and lived his life as he wanted. He didn't like other actors and he despised the 'false' elements of showbusiness. He chose to socialise with what he regarded as real people - working men, the builders who worked on his house for example. Every morning he'd take them to the pub for a quick one before they started work on his stately home, Broome Hall. Of course they'd end up boozing there all day, then Ollie would complain that they hadn't done any work and his house renovations, which were supposed to be completed in weeks, took months! But still he couldn't resist dragging them all down to the pub to keep him company! When drunk, he'd get aggressive. Christopher Lee once said he learned to leave when Ollie started his eighth drink, because he knew he would soon turn into a devil. His rage was often directed at females, and I suspect he had a complicated relationship with his mother, who split from his father when he was just a year old. He said as a child he would act as barman at home, pouring drinks for his mother's many lovers - most of whom flew Spitfires, and were killed in the war. Did he resent these men visiting his mother I wonder, and grow to fear women's sexual power? Little boys can be possessive about their mums. Oliver Reed was so much more than a hell raiser. He was an intelligent, articulate and sensitive man who appreciated beauty, grew beautiful flowers in his beloved gardens, and loved animals. He said he wanted to kiss the wet nose of every dog in the world - it was said he could never pass a dog without petting it. I think that's a wonderful epitaph for him. At his request, his gravestone (placed within walking distance of his local pub in Ireland), reads: HE MADE THE AIR MOVE. He certainly did that!

@@Ghhyuttgg He must have been back on it full time during Gladiator as Ridley Scott recalls in his director's commentary that Reed often got drunk on his days off whilst on location in Morocco and would walk through the marketplaces violently lashing out at tourists and locals. Talking of Oliver Reed running into some sailors reminds me of the Norman Wisdom film 'The Bulldog Breed', in which Reed plays a bully put to rights by a couple of sailors.. One of which is played by Michael Caine! Both very small parts, very early in their careers.
