Thanks for such an honest and informed review. Based on this, I've just bought these wonderfully neutral headphones. Will be used for mixing and mastering. A small company doing big things!

Dave, it’s good to know your impressions of the new Ollo Audio S5X✨This is a very intriguing headphone as I wrote to Rok and his team’s channel when they launched it. I sense that Ollo Audio is one the few headphones companies that understands how to approach Audio Realism rather than following the flawed Harman Target curve. Plus, they care about the environment👍

Hi Dave, Thanks for the info. Would this be your #1 recommendation for mixing/mastering in the sub $1,000 range? For reference, I just ordered the Sennheiser HD 600, Shure SH1840 and Neumann NDH30 to test out.
@TheHonestAudiophile

I haven't heard the SH1840 or NDH30. I have owned the HD600 for several years and love it. I would say of the headphones I have heard, the S5X is the best under $500 for mixing/mastering. Please keep in mind, I am not a professional audio engineer and I do not do much of it at all; I use a mixing board weekly at my local church.

how did you find the Shure 1840? my first impression was too little bass, but then i changed the pads to a cheep (but deep) chinese hybrid pu/velour ... and BOOM!!! 😁

Out of those, I kept the Senheisser HD600. Really pristine, flat sounding headphones. A bit clampy on the head but not too bad. But yeah they just felt the most neutral sounding out of the 3 which was what I was looking for since I mix audio for a living. I later came into some Senheisser 800S headphones, which have a better soundstage, but are much more expensive. If you are looking at that under $500 range, I would highly recommend the HD 600

@@joshtackett I did exactly what you did, listened to a lot of pairs of headphones, and decided on the HD 600. Do you use another set of headphones or speakers to make decisions about sub-bass?

Handy review. Yourself as a audiophile you gave a good understanding to these headphones purpose. I would expect a audiophile to simply just say that they are boring, which for music listening they might be. But when you have to have monitoring be your most valued critique such headphone are essential. As a mix and mastering engineer I have gotten a lot of useful information about them from this review, more so than the rest I watched so well done. The problem with the more HiFi type of sound is they are just aiming to mask all the bad so you get the most lush experience. If you are only buying headphone to listen to music on then seek those lush ones because it's just going to be the best listen all the time. But if need professional critique when listening then something like this is perfect. I need some that are going to do me when when doing binaural and atmos mixing and I think these might be a great option. The best for mastering and mixing at the moment are the Audeze MM-500 Open-Back Headphones, but these are £1,500 for B stock pairs. I will be getting these also soon, because I can not do the acoustics where I'm at at the moment so speakers will not be a good monitoring format, so headphones will take the room out of the equation. I've not really been confident of mixing on headphones until the last few years with the advances in studio headphones. I will be getting these soon and will give my honest opinion once I have had a chance to give them a listen and see how well mixes are translating and do so as a reply to this comment. Thanks for the review!!!

Glad you found the review helpful. I look forward to hearing your impressions of the Ollo S5X for your purposes of mixing and mastering. Your comments are spot on. Thank you. I've not heard the MM-500 but I would love the opportunity to review them at some point. I do love my LCD-5 though, they're a great reference headphone.

@@TheHonestAudiophile My initial impression was one of underwhelm. These headphones are real cool cats, no unnecessary excitement or exaggeration in them. But after listening to some music I realized how revealing and brutally honest these are. I started to hear fader and eq moves, compression, tape crunch, distortion and even mistakes I never noticed before. It really gives a lot of information, sonically and musically, and I was especially impressed by how well I started to hear the sound imparted by all the elements of the recording process - mics, room acoustics in the recording, mixing decisions, the sonic qualities of the mixing desk and recording medium. Impressive stuff, but most of all it tells me I can genuinely trust this headphone during mixing. And one last thing - it really makes it very obvious why some recordings just sound good and others don't, no matter the decade in which they were produced.

Hi, I just want to know, how much does the sound leak outside of these headphones? I personal work space is a well treated quiet space, but I also need headphones for mixing and mastering in school. So there's often some noise in class wether it's people talking, repeated mouse and keyboard clicks or whatever. I know it's open-back but how much does the sound leak out and how much do we hear what's outside of the headphones please? Thank you

Your comparison to the s4x doesn't make sense when you say that the "s4x has elevated bass, mids and treble", if something is elevated in all frequency ranges, then it's just a "louder" set at a given power input surely? I was confused
@TheHonestAudiophile
Жыл бұрын
When I use the term elevated or elevation I'm referring to it being more prominent or pronounced in a particular area. I do the best I can to volume match when testing gear. I listen between 65db and 75db.

Nice but I would like to hear something about the instrument separation..for some genres it is very important..Is it a clear step up from usual studio suspects like dt 880 or hd 300 - 660s or not ?

Hello, very good video, but you can't buy headphones for 450 dollars at about 5,000 dollars, audeze plays in another league. I wanted some audeze LCD X but I see them very heavy and too much money to invest, so for 500 dollars I think the best is ollo sx5
