Would love to hear more from Teri. I know she says she doesn’t like the stage, but I’d listen to her talk nonstop for a month about all the stories she must have from such an exciting life with her Olympian daughter.

It’s really sad how the USAG system was or maybe still is with excluding the parents so heavily. I know not everyone had a coach that protected them and for the parents to not even be able to see their kids, let alone stay in the same hotel is really extreme. I hope for the gymnast of today these rules aren’t the same. Especially after so many failures were happening behind the scenes to these child athletes. Can’t imagine sending an 11 year old across the world and just have to trust they will be looked after. I understand why her parents traveled everywhere she went. I’m glad they could afford to do so. Not to be a downer on this video I just can’t believe that system was considered the “norm”. You can really see how much it affected Shawn’s mother. Plus her daughter had a successful career. I can’t imagine all the sacrifices other athletes and their parents made, only to not make the final Olympic team.

That was a very excellent story!! Wow... It seems like there could be a better way than to isolate kids from parents and vise versa -- I could empathize with Mrs. Johnson and the emotion of going through that... and I do understand her relief that Shawn married a wonderful man as my daughter is exactly Shawn's age, is successful and smart, and too, married an absolutely wonderful man... sometimes I think as a parent seeing your (one and only) daughter stable, grounded, and happy with a good man is an ultimate parental "gold metal," pure thankfulness to Christ, and a little bit of relief and pride, too.

I’d love for Shawn to have a video with her mom and have her mom express what it’s like to be a mom to an Olympian (also only child)

Awesome story. Loved hearing her talk about Shawn's early years. Very enjoyable and I'm sure Shawn had a few tears in her eyes as her mother was trying not to cry. loved it.

Hey, DMRegister - the microphone isn't supposed to block the speaker's face!

A lapel mic would probably have been better, especially for a speaker whose style was not to stand totally still. There’s no reason for the mic to be angled down and blocking the face unless there’s no time between speakers to adjust for the height of the speaker. I can’t see why they couldn’t have just lowered the mic before she started.
