There is so much ignorance here, so many people seem to think if it's not done their way then it's wrong... yes you ask kindly first, but it's the riders job to be in control and not let the horse make decisions; these course are complicated and take a lot of control to navigate. if you get no response or worse yet disobedience, yes you ask again, and more firmly until you get the answer. These are top level competitive horses that get better care than most people. It takes a special horse with skill and drive to reach the Olympics. it's unfair to take a few bad clips and base a horse's entire life off of it and call it cruelty. I'll reiterate these horses are strong and spirited; let's see any one of you get to the Olympics one one of these horses bareback and bit less, then we'll talk about horsemanship.

No, this is cruel and painful for horses. I practice show jumping, and I always try to ride with my weight, my balance and my legs through the jumps, and the LAST thing I do is pull the reins in that way! And these jumps are maybe 1.10mt high, is not a difficult course, and I think a bit more riding experience can be useful when you are an Olympic athlete. However maybe some riders have no choice, if they fall off or the horse become spooky, but anyway this is bad riding. (sorry for the bad english)
@TheOtherParker

I still think its unfair the number of people in the comments saying these are bad riders; I'm sorry, but it's just not true! These -are- difficult courses: it's the Olympics! Could be wrong, but I believe Olympic showjumping height is aroung 1.60; the standards are large so yes, they can appear to be smaller. Everyone has bad moments and makes mistakes, 90% of these riders DO ride with their weight and their seat in a good ride. You can't just take a few bad clips and call them bad riders, that's all I was trying to say. I'm not ashamed to say yes sometimes I catch a bad distance and pull on the reins harder than necessary- thank god the horses I ride save me, and they always get lots of extra love! If accidentally pulling or causing discomfort to the horse is cruelty, then I suppose no one should be riding, because it happens. Just my opinion :)

Sarah P Well these appear smaller because they are smaller. Because this is not Olympic showjumping, this is the riding portion of the Modern Pentathlon, which consists of swimming, fencing, riding, and a combined run and shoot. They get assigned random horses, and get twenty minutes of warm-up time over two jumps, before going onto the course. So the riding level is no where near that of Olympic Showjumping.

@ScarsFromTomorrow1
10 жыл бұрын
Sam Kondej Yes it is overuse! Having to use crops or spurs or bits at all is overuse! A bit is not to control a horse, it's designed to help steer. A rider's seat and legs are meant to control speed. Spurs are meant to be lightly used on a horse who doesn't respond well to the leg. A whip is just for people who can't make a horse behave and believe that hitting the horse will. A simple reprimand would be a slight pull on the reins or nudging the horse with a foot. I understand full well about these devices. Probably more as I have researched into them. Bits were designed way before anyone knew how to train a horse kindly. The way they are designed always causes pain to the horse from where it rests in the horse's mouth. There is no justification for using those, particularly for an Olympic level rider who is meant to know how to control and ride a horse. Cues are meant too be nearly undetectable. Kicking a horse and yanking on the reins and smacking the horse with a crop are all signs of inexperienced or bad riders.

Getting to the Olympics as a rider has got to be the ultimate achievement. When your horse refuses time and time again as this one did, I see where the rider just might become more than a little bit frustrated. I'll bet this horse was able to make these jumps time and time again with no problems. It wouldn't have been there if it hadn't. Who says this is not abuse, is wrong. I ride and teach riding, and pulling the bit especially is NOT proper horse riding. Using the whip is ok, if timed well and used as an AID. Not punishment. Spurs are NOT for naughty horses. Spurs should be used to minimize leg aids. when used as they often are it's just cruelty and beating a horse with iron. It's simple to know if youre abusing your horse: try using the aid on yourself. if it hurts a lot, it's abuse. Horses are as sensitive as humans.

There's no education on how and when to reprimand them for a refusal. I had a jump lesson a few days back and the horse was being a bit of a cheeky shit and putting in a few stops. First we gave him the benefit of the doubt and let him have a good look at the jump, next time around he jumped it fine, turned him into a line he'd jumped already and he hit the skids again. Coach had told me that if he stopped again, tell him off at the base of the jump and give him a good couple kicks and a slap just for a few seconds and growl at him, giving him the idea that if he stops, he's in trouble. It must have made him think as he didn't try it again, I took him to a show today and there was no hint of 'Hmm I might be a shit!!'. Beating them up on the way to the jump just makes them think 'Well she doesn't want me to jump that fence, so I wont!!'

not trying to be rude but these riders are not bad riders and just because they fell off. okay when you first start training or riding a young horse you should learn the number one rule make good choices easy and bad ones hard. like when your horse refuses a fence you kick him and give him a tap with a crop. this is not abuse. horses are not humans they are 20 times bigger then us and they can take harder hits. lets say you got kicked by a horse you could break a bone get a concusion or even die. but for a horse if they get kicked there not gonna die but they could break a bone if it was hit in the right spot but what ever what i'm trying to say is that tapping with a crop is not as painful as u think and i do agree that sometimes people do take it to far and they go crazy a hit horses and abuse them but there is a diffrence between a bad rider and a good rider,corrections and abuse.

A proper martingale does not hurt your horse. I don´t know what it´s called in English(i´m from Sweden) but we only allow "löpande martingal", the other version "fast martingal" is not allowed since it can hurt the horse seriously! Some horses are holding their heads like they think they are a giraffe, . Some people DO abuse horses but not most people. These pics are taken at a moment where it looks like they're aren't happy, but I see most Olympic horses they enjoy what they do.

Bad riders ARE in the Olympics. You have no idea what goes on in the barns. Many horses are trained to jump higher by someone standing by the jump and raising the bar whenever the horse jumps, hitting its legs over and over again in the same spot. How about the Olympic rider who beats the shit out of the horse if he doesn't win? Or 1 famous equestrian who blinded his horse in the eye with a whip? I was a groom but I had to quit ,there was so much abuse going on where the public doesn't see it.

This is pathetic. Do you really think that what was going on here was abuse. The lady in the pentathlon had never ridden that horse before and was only backing up her aids with the crop. These olympic horses only get the best, the best food, the best training and everything like that. And just because a rider falls off doesn't mean they are a bad rider and does definitely not count as horse abuse. Falling off would most likely hurt the rider more than the horse. It takes years and years to be able to ride at this level but we can still make little mistakes that cause us to lose our balance or maybe knock down a pole that would case us to fall off our horse. If this is what you think horse abuse is then I would love to see your face when you find out what real horse abuse is.

Your right, but most of these riders audition for the Olympics on the horse they will be riding during the Olympics, that's a rule.

More than one of my charges had to be handwalked for excercise because they would not stay in their paddocks. One had to be turned out in the indoor ring because he was too fractious to hand walk and the indoor ring was the only place he could be contained. A new weanling arrived and we put her out in a paddock adjoining the back side of the indoor ring.. My mare was turned out in a paddock adjoining the front side of the indoor ring. the ring dutch doors were closed. Continued

I'm not arguing with you. Tail swishing doesn't always mean they are uncomfortable same thing with throwing their head up they can get excited and do that. I think it's arrogant of you to find using a crop -not whip- abusive.
@StephieLilley

and not just that but spurs are used to back up the leg if used correctly just like the crop does not hurt the horse. The crop is a confidence boost. Just because you ride with spurs or a crop doesn't make you a bad rider. Get educated before complaining about things that you probably know nothing about.

at 1:15 the horse is just opening it mouth a bit like all horses do, I ride with my reins as short as that and my horse never does that, any ways, these are only pictures, the horse could been doing that for only the space of a second! nobody knows!

this makes people who wear spurs, use a whip or bit extremely bad.. I ride with a bit not to yank its in there mouth or hurt them but for a learning tool. This makes me mad bc not everyone treats there animal like this.

Alright, I am just going to point out a few things to the person that made this video. There are morons in every sport. Yes you have some clips of a woman constantly spurring her horse. That sucks, but I have seen low level people beat the shit out of their horses. my issue is , just because you have a picture or two of someone falling off doesnot mean they are a bad rider. this is a pretty bad attempt to prove abuse.

it sometimes is abusive if you re-petevly hit your horse with it. people hit there horses so hard it's unbelivable. but sometimes crops are not abusive it depense on the way you use them on your horse.

But you're missing the point. Just because something happens in a crowd, doesn't mean they always act like that when they're alone. For example, a friend of mine is sort of rough with her dog when she's at the park or somewhere, but it's because she needs to keep the dog under control. Other than that, she loves her dog to pieces and treats him well. Of course, it's not the same situation as this, but there are things you shouldn't assume right away.

Just because you don't like her opinion doesn't mean it's not correct. It doesn't mean it's right either. Flagging that as "spam" is hypocritical of you 'cause I could disagree with you and flag you as spam but I won't. The spam button is used for people who give links to virus-infested websites, not opinions. I rest my case. Although, she is right about the bad riders, everyone falls off. Just like a singer- they have their bad days but it doesn't mean they are bad artists.

! Not all riders are cruel MOST riders don't use spurs, some don't even use bits, and the Olympics should end!??? ! And saying these arnt real horsemen!!! It takes guts to do this, not like riding around a barrel! It takes trianing! to be able to compete in all 3, come one... Riding around a barrel scares you more? Chasing a cow scares you? Do don't e men. Because most Olympic riders have more trust in their horse then you have in your mum.

this is not abuse. the pentathlon is not in the olympics. i know how it works. the riders dont even see the horse until the day they ride them. they look bad because they dont know the horse AT ALL. as far as i know they dont get a practice round either.

No, you are the one offering an opinion, not fact. As for what they were meant to do, that included jumping, sometimes large obstacles. Loose horses jump fences of their own free willls without humans involved at all. I've worked in the horse industry all of my life and have met more than a handful of horses who were not impressed with fences. Continued

From the way you talk it's true. I get so sick of people saying that crops, knob spurs, bits, etc are cruel. The people in these videos are examples. Watch Hickstead and Eric Lamaze. There are bad riders and their are good riders. If they are in the Olympics clearly they are good riders. People are so arrogant nowadays that it pisses me off. So go learn more about horses from someone before contacting me again.

Yeah I agree, this isn't horse abuse, your just changing the picture entirely. Horses ENJOY training for this event, and whipping is only used give them a boost sometimes, it's not like they whip them for 'minutes' . It's more like seconds. If you think this is abuse then type in youtube: horse abuse and your in for a real shock mate.

You obviously know nothing about riding. 99% of all Olympic horses are cared for like celebrities and receive much love. While some riders are cruel, and harsher, these are not cases of abuse. These are just some moments of the horses behavin negatively. Nothing abusive here

@Michael Burkinshaw More like being abusive lazy pricks that don't take into consideration how their horse feels. All they care about is winning their little blue ribbon. This is no horsemanship. They just want the fast easy way because they are too lazy and only care about themselves.

And you think that whipping, spurring and using a harsh bit, and/or jerking the bit and pulling on it as hard as you can, isn't abuse???? What do you consider abuse??? I feel sorry for any animal or human who is around you. Do you enjoy torturing animals and kids or is abusing a horse the only thing that you do???
@CherrysHeart61

You are citing a very few examples, most of which show nothing even conceivably wrong and then painting with a broad brush and calling abuse. It is easy to take photos and catch the second or two that a horse opens it's mouth, stick's it's tongue out or opens it's eyes wide, none of which proves abuse. Olympic level riders don't arrive at their level by practicing abuse. Also, those sports are thoroughly monitored and the horses are physically examined multiple times at competitions.

Check out Rick Gore's video on snaffle bits and educate yourself before making an ass out of yourself. BITS HURT HORSES, especially when someone pulls on the bit, jerks it around. I think that if you can't ride without overusing the bit, or using a harsh one, whipping and/or spurring your horse, you need to stay away from horses. If I saw anyone abusing horses I would not tolerate it for a second.

Riders of the class we are talking about care about their horses' futures and do not simply use them and throw them away. You'd be hard pressed to find many of their retired mounts living "crippled painful lives". You have no idea what you are talking about. You obviously do not know these people or circulate within their community.
