I ran the 400 hurdles in NJ back in the 1980s - one of only a handful of states that run that particular race at the high school level.. It is a tough tough race. McLaughlin got the last spot by pulling strongly away over the very last hurdle. That shows not only great conditioning but a steel will. In one season, this girl has taken 1.05 seconds off a high school record that had stood for 32 years. That is a SHOCKING amount of time for a 400 meter race and is unprecedented in high school track and field.

@Monntanaaxx

Tayjah Kenn are you referring to the hurdles? The reason they are staggered is because the distance around each lap increases from lane 1-8, so the person in lane 1 starts on the starting line whereas lane 8 will start metres ahead so all of the runners run the same length and the athletes in the outer lanes are not disadvantaged by running extra. I used to compete in athletics and hurdles was one of my favourite events. I hope this answered your question :)
