I don't share the excitement about the little Oly recorders. Mic preamps in the old and cheaper Zoom H1 are better (more gain and less self noise), the zoom mic on the LS-Ps sounds phase shifted. I do however like the charging feature and overall handling on the LS-Ps. I generally get better results with the bass mic turned off, bass is easy to add in post. Zoom H1 sounds a little better because of the XY mic positioning, the capsules are very similar though. On Olympus cameras, mic preamps seem pretty bad, so I see this as a workaround by Olympus which could help Canon users as well, no need for this on Sony or Panasonic cameras as their mic preamps are decent enough. Very entertaining video, thank you 😎

A great review and explanation, thanks TSOP. I use an old 3-mic, metal body OM DMC-670 and the recent LS-P5 with Bluetooth. Both are tiny, feature-rich quality audio recorders.

Very good video! I was only wondering if I can use the LS-P4 to record pieces of guitar fingerpicking excercises with and can produce afterwards a decent sound? Probably not the correct place to ask?

Thanks for the helpful information; plus very entertaining. I just acquired an LS-P4 for some interview projects. BTW, there is a way to run the audio through the camera without using the camera preamps. You have to turn them off in the Movie settings on the Olympus. You then have to use the LSP4’s controls to set audio in/out but at least you get away from the weak preamps in the camera so the audio is much more similar to the original. You can still use both the merged audio and the separate recording if you wish to compare.

Have I missed something here? I've just viewed two videos of the LSP4 with an Oly' DSLR where a cable is taken direct from the LSP4 into the mic input of the camera which records directly to the camera 'plus' the recording is also fed to the LSP4 so you end up with two recordings, one in camera and one on the LSP4. There was also the option to record only to the LSP4, or only to the camera (via the LSP4) as well as both.

Great video! I always have to sync sound to video as I'm nowhere near the camera. When I first bought mine my laveliers wouldn't work --- then they did......No Idea why?????

It is a good recorder, which "I" use for the meditation guide audio. Noising reduction is a must, but it does not deny the excellence of this tiny bit.

When using the Olympus OMD EM5II you have to sync all audio in post unless you want completely trash sound. Unless you have found a way to get around the Olympus hiss? (And no, turning down -10 in camera is nowhere near good)

Olympus recorder review ! As it happens, I just bought an Olympus DM-450 recorder for very cheap from eBay UK charity for less than 20 last week.. Yes I know it is not as good as the excellent one shown here.. but it works.. And as I watched I hooked up via 'earphone' socket to D5100 to try it out and that worked..

I want to slap this on top of a GH5 and record in the treismic mode with all 3 mics in max quality. How would I set it up on this recorder? There's many modes I don't understand. I just want juicy human ear like audio for B roll

Hi and thanks for this very good review. My goal is to record Nature sound like birds. Is the LS-P4 will be good for that ? I own an Olympus E-M5 II but I would like to use with it but also/mainly without the camera as I want to explore the "sound" world of forest. Do you think it should be "GO" to buy it ?

Certainly was, now I'm looking at how to minimize wind noise further. I've a 'Don King' on it but noticed even with that there's noticeable wind gusts being picked up. Did you get that too?

Hello. Is the sound as good as an usb mic like the Yeti, Rode NT-USB or AT2020? I'm looking for something very sensitive to use it for skype but also to record diverse sounds at a distance of 1 or 2 meters. If they had the same quality I would buy the Olympus LS-P4 because it adds the ability to record and it's much more portable.

When using the LS-P4 plugged into a Sony AX53, does the camera pause the Olympus when recording. In other words, if I start recording on the LS-P4 with the button, record for 5 minutes, pause the video camera for 5 minutes, then record another 5 minutes, will I have 15 minutes recording on the LS-P4 compared to just 10 minutes recording on the Sony?

hey I search a sound recording device for my university and I wanted to ask if this is a good option or not and how far is the range of this device where it records sth... because it can be that I sit at the end of the seminar room or in the mid and my university doesn't have speakers that's why I need a good recorder

Great content, yet your lapel levels are peaking and the zoom feature sounds weird, almost impossible to get a sense with the loud water lapping.

It's 100 Brit pounds on Amazon in the end of Nov. Some kind of promotion, I guess. For that kind of money it's a good offer. About the video - you could have told more about how it charges and what it records on. I watched the video and have to check that additionally. Cheers for comparing the sound quality, though. The Rode sounded a bit thinner. I think the Oly is better if same mic was used.

Its one of the poorest recorders when it comes to selfnoise. A real step down. The famous predecessors like Olympus LS11, LS5 are much better.
