ओ३म् (ॐ) या ओंकार परमात्मा, ईश्वर, उस एक के मुख से निकलने वाला पहला शब्द है जिसने इस संसार की रचना में प्राण डाले। ॐ, ओम की तीन मात्राएं है। अकार, उकार, और मकार जो प्रकृति के तीन गुणों को बताती है। अकार सतोगुण को, उकार रजोगुण को तथा मकार तमोगुण की प्रतीक है। ॐ के ऊपर बिंदी तीनों गुणों से परे या तीनों में समानता की निर्गुणता की प्रतीक है। ॐ के उच्चारण का साधक जब ये जानकर जाप करता है तो वो सांसारिक गुणों में दोष देखता हुआ निर्गुणता को शीघ्र ही प्राप्त होता हैं। ओम ॐ के जाप, सही उच्चारण से शारीरिक ऊर्जा को आध्यात्मिक ऊर्जा से, और उस आध्यात्मिक ऊर्जा को ब्रह्मांड ऊर्जा से जोड़ जीव अस्तित्व के परम आनंद को प्राप्त कर सकता है। वैदिक शास्त्रों में ओम की बहुत महिमा कही गई है। मारकंडे पुराण में , योग ऋषि दत्तात्र्य जी ने बताया है कि मानव को ओम रूपी धनुष पर अपनी आत्मा रूपी बाण को अपने लक्ष्य, उस एक ईश्वर की ओर साध देना चाहिए। ओम ब्रह्मांड में सदैव गुज्यमान रहता है। और जीव भी सही अभ्यास से उसके उच्चारण द्वारा इस ब्रह्मांड की गूंज से जुड़ असीम आनंद की प्राप्ति कर सकता है।
ईश्वर के साथ ओंकार का वाच्य-वाचक-भाव सम्बन्ध नित्य है, सांकेतिक नहीं। संकेत नित्य या स्वाभाविक सम्बन्ध को प्रकट करता है। सृष्टि के आदि में सर्वप्रथम ओंकाररूपी प्रणव का ही स्फुरण होता है। तदनन्तर सात करोड़ मन्त्रों का आविर्भाव होता है। इन मन्त्रों के वाच्य आत्मा के देवता रूप में प्रसिद्ध हैं। ये देवता माया के ऊपर विद्यमान रह कर मायिक सृष्टि का नियन्त्रण करते हैं। इन में से आधे शुद्ध मायाजगत् में कार्य करते हैं और शेष आधे अशुद्ध या मलिन मायिक जगत् में। इस एक शब्द को ब्रह्माण्ड का सार माना जाता है, 16 श्लोकों में इसकी महिमा वर्णित है।

Om emerged in the Vedic corpus and is said to be an encapsulated form of Samavedic chants or songs.It is a sacred spiritual incantation made before and during the recitation of spiritual texts, during puja and private prayers, in ceremonies of rites of passage (samskara) such as weddings, and during meditative and spiritual activities such as Pranava yoga. It is part of the iconography found in ancient and medieval era manuscripts, temples, monasteries, and spiritual retreats in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. As a syllable, it is often chanted either independently or before a spiritual recitation and during meditation in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
The syllable Om is also referred to as Onkara (Omkara) and Pranava among many other names.
