While on vacation in February 2016 on New Zealand's South Island, I took a soaring flight with one of Glide Omarama's flight instructors, Dan McCormack. We enjoyed a 3 hour flight, utilizing thermal, ridge, and wave lift to fly from Omarama to Mount Cook and back, topping out around 13,000 feet. Mount Cook is the highest point in New Zealand at over 12,000 feet.
For those new to soaring/gliding: Beyond the initial 2000 to 3000 foot above-the-ground tow from another aircraft, there was no engine used in this flight. In fact, the glider that we were in, the Duo Discus, has no engine.
[Update December 2021: Glide Omarama is no longer operating] If you are ever on the South Island of New Zealand, and are not prone to motion sickness, I highly recommend spending a day going to Omarama to take Glide Omarama's "long flight". www.glideomaram...
