If you want to lose your mind then try to take the seal out. I’ve been working on it for two days. Tried all of the methods you’ve shown plus a few MacGyver tricks. I don’t the the seal has ever been replaced in 23 years. Stuck like no other and there isn’t enough of a lip on the race to grab with a tool. Going for Plan Z: Dremel grinding without hitting the aluminum housing. Fingers crossed I don’t have replace the housing. Any last suggestions?

Michael Romer .... had to take the motor out to extract broken starter bolt; when I did I found accumulation of grease in bellows. Figured it was a good time to replace the gimbal and decided to replace the seal at the same time. You know, “while the engine is out I’ll go ahead and do some simple preventative maintenance”. I have to say, your videos made things very easy. The seal was a pain, but after trying all of the different methods I destroyed the seal enough where there wasn’t any turning back. The dremel grinding ended up working without any damage. Took my sweet a$$ time and it popped right out. I don’t recommend anyone try that method as the first attempt as it was very risky. I just got lucky. Had a couple of beers first to steady my hand with the dremel tool. Thanks Michael for all the help.

Hey Alex and @Michael Romer. Gimbal bearing was totally rusted out. Removed in 2 minutes with a slide hammer and the three pronged pullers. Read the shop manual and watched several videos, including this (Michael, yours truly are the best) and thought “while I’m at it” I’ll replace the seal. So, slipped the slide hammer in and started pulling. Tool came out but just tore through the race and the rubber. Upon closer examination, it appears the seal is perhaps sitting behind a lip...? Almost as if that seal was not meant to come out. The bore does appear to slope up toward the lip so perhaps slightly compress the race and then seats behind the lip when installing? Have you ever seen this? I shouldn’t have touched the seal in hindsight but too late. Have tried the screwdriver but can’t get under the race. A few minor gauges in the aluminum and stopped. Started with a dremel cutting wheel but was super nervous and stopped. Was really trying to avoid this, but may have to take the upper assembly off and pound out from the back. Any other thoughts? I am still concerned a new seal won’t even go back over that lip even if I do get the seal out.

After a chisel, screwdriver and a lot of patience, I was able to get the seal out. It was an optical illusion as it did not sit behind a lip. Was able to get the seal and the bearing in after watching your videos a few more times. Thanks, again!

I am confused on the video to remove the transom oil seal with a puller. I have the OMC Cobra 1988 outdrive attached to an SEI 116 Conversion kit. When I removed the drive for the winter I noticed a spring on the back of the shaft. I assume this is the oil seal spring. In all of the diagrams the oil seal is behind the gimbal bearing on the engine side. How did you removing the seal without removing the Gimbal bearing?

I can see how it would technically be a bellow, but it is more of a sleeve, and it should never fail. There is an o-ring that could fail and allow water to leak: www.crowleymarine.com/parts/6641.cfm

Hey Michael, I’m planning to replace my gimbal bearing and bellows so I’m wondering if I should be doing the oil seal at the same time. What would be the determining factors to replace it too? Or would you just do it because you have everything dismantled so you might as well? Thanks
@michaelromer2016

If the seal has never been replaced, I would have them swap it. It keeps the gimbal area from taking in water and it keeps the excess grease from getting out as well.

On a 1994 cobra omc 5.8 water is leaking in the boat from under the spline shaft that goes into the back of the motor what seal do you think can be leaking for that to happen?
@michaelromer2016
5 жыл бұрын
Depends on what is leaking, if it is water you have two things to consider here: 1.) The transom oil seal and the drive shaft bellow are comprised. That is a huge problem and you need to get them both replaced ASAP. If it is just oil you see, I wouldn't stress as much, but make sure you are keeping your gimbal bearing greased and also check your stern drive oil level before you take it out on the lake. Another thing to consider here is your outer transom seal is leaking--that's a doomsday scenario and you have to remove your motor to replace it.

@@michaelromer2016 first of thank you for taking the time to help me I really appreciate it and the other thing is it is just water that was dripping in to the boat and it's really hard to see exactly where its coming from from what I can see it's running in underneath the shaft that goes into the engine I made a video with my phone and I posted them on my KZitem account anthonysdad77@gmail.com one video is 5 min long and you can kinda see what I'm talking about from around the .50 second till the 1:40 and then you can skip to the 3:00 min to see it again I didn't know how to edit the video and the other video Is around 3 min long and if you skip to 1:40 seconds and you can see some other angles

It keeps grease from your gimbal bearing from going inside the engine compartment by keeping a good seal around the engine coupler shaft. If your upper bellow is damaged, the oil transom seal also keeps water from going inside the engine compartment.

FYI, finally got the oil seal out of the Volvo Penta SX. Used slide hammer, vice grip, and all other far reaching tools (no help). Found out this was a garment not the traditional oil seal. Thought you and your viewers might like to know. Used the definition of insanity, "Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result".
