You might do reactions to the original African song, Mbube, recorded in 1939 by Solomon Linda, and the first American folk version recorded in 1952 by The Weavers. Both are available on KZitem. The original by Soloman Linda is a tribal chant with Soloman improvising falsetto notes on top. You can make out a few runs that made their way into the later versions. The melody in The Weavers version is exactly the same as what The Tokens later used, but The Weavers version had no lyrics in English.

In their 1961 original version of the song. The Soprano part of the song done in the background was sung by Opera Singer Ms. Anita Darian who passed away back on February 1st, 2015, at 87 years old. Though she was not in the credits her contribution to the song was immense and memorable. Her high pitch vocals in the background will always have a lasting impression for decades to come. In this video you have Soprano Kelly De Fade who does a fantastic job of matching Ms. Anita Darian's vocals in the background in this performance. These women need to be recognized for their contribution and adding their voices to one of the most listen to and played songs in Rock & Roll history. Priceless!

This song has a long and interesting history. First titled "Mbube" and performed by Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds in 1939. Mbube means Lion in the Zulu language. Legendary folk singer Pete Seeger recorded a version in 1952 called "Wimoweh", which was a mispronunciation of "Uyimbube", which means You are a lion in Zulu. The song hit the top ten and Pete was informed of the song's origins. He learned Solomon Linda hadn't earned a single penny in royalties, so Pete sent his earnings for the song to Solomon. It is believed the funds never made it to Solomon however. The Tokens used the Pete Seeger version to audition in acapella for a record contract in 1961, and it was turned into the pop hit we know today! 80 some years later, the song still amazes and thrills us.
