You ask 'What happened to Dewsbury'? I will tell you in one word - IMMIGRATION.

I was born in Dewsbury in 1946. Being a woollen mill town it was never a glamorous place but in my youth it was at least well kept and always full of activity. Dewsbury Town Hall is still magnificent but other than that these days the town centre is an absolute dump, a total embarrassment. Thank goodness I don't live there anymore.

I’m not sure what’s happening, I’m a few miles away in Huddersfield. It’s pretty much the same. It’s like everyone as giving up. And the towns reflect the way of the people in them. Every things gone flat

spot on comment. It's interesting to compare the situation to a few years ago (particularly pre covid) on Google Street View. Very sad to see.

My folks born and bred Dewsbury. When i was a kid we visited family just about every Saturday, I'm 59 now. My parents left when my Dad joined the RAF and never went back. I used to love visiting Dewsbury, the shops, the market were the best around. Christmas was always a magical time. The last few times I have been i couldn't wait to get the HELL out of there its a Swamp.

I was born in Staincliffe Hospital, Dewsbury, in 1973 and grew up down the road in Mirfield. I got out in 1998. I've been back a handful of times since but was shocked to see the real decline in the state of the buildings and the ghost town feel about the place. What a shame because if you look at the stunning architecture of Dewsbury, it was once a great looking town centre.

grew up in dewsbury in the 60/70s , absolutely heartbreaking to see. the market used to be a popular coach trip, was a really vibrant mill/ market town. with the decline of the textile trade the money just left dewsbury. never seenit looking so run down, shame because theres still a lot of great buildings left. looks like a thirld world / war zone now. says it all really, all thats left gambling dens, take aways and eastern european shops. such a shame and waste.

Blimey - what a video. It seems most UK towns have gone into decline in the last few years. The Covid situation was the obvious nail in the coffin. The council seem to be adamant with their anti car stance, which only seems to accelerate the decline of these towns. Come on bus people - your town needs you !

Too bloody right, on the rare occasions when I have to endure a visit to my home town of 67 years I struggle to recognise the language spoken by any of the very dubious denizens that lurk there. We need to grow some balls and make them fear and respect us again.

Rather different when comparing the older street views. To the north long Halifax Road pass the Lidl a modern style Kirklees College Sixth Form was constructed few years ago. The former Kirklees College is being demolished (part of the old building will remain but many architectural details removed) and new Kirklees District Police Station to be constructed to serve Dewsbury and Huddersfield.

Go 2 miles up the road to Ossett, and it’s a thriving, wealthy and smart town. Dewsbury was a nice place in the 1970’s and early 80’s - but it is now horrendous, sad. It’s famous for being one of the only places where even McDonalds shut down. There is one on the main road near Ossett now. It has a few decent pubs, the one at the Station is decent and there’s an Ossett Brewery one.

Born and grew up in Dewsbury. We moved away when I was 14 in 1988. The decline from those days is shocking. We were passing through a couple of years ago so we stopped and had a walk around. Was quite upsetting to see what's become of it. Daisy Hill in particular is dreadful. My wife even admitted to feeling a little unsafe when we were there.

it's shocking for us who live here too. You can go down into the town one weekend and think it can't get any worse, then go down the following week and more places shut down. Since you were here they've got rid of Barclays bank now. Lots of shopkeepers have tried to make a go of it but the rents are just too high and so they only last a couple of weeks. Anyway thanks for the video..and stay well.

Historically, I think you have to go back to Thatcher. She was the main catalyst for exploiting the poor, destroying industry, high streets etc. Many northern towns have been neglected by succesive governments. Recent events have just accellerated the decline. So sad to see it happen in such a short time.
