This scene made Cecil one of my favorite characters in the series. At the beginning he seemed just like a typical G-man dude who was all about results and didn't care about people. But as time passes you realize that he's actually incredibly complex, and hates himself for so many of the things he does, even if they're for the greater good. You can feel his pain when he says they were friends. He's angry, betrayed, he's lost someone who he truly cares about. Not only that, but he's willing to stand Nolan down himself, alone. He's got the teleporter, but he has to trust the operator to save him. This moment is more badass than anything Omni-Man did all season. Omni-Man's basically invulnerable, he's never scared of losing. Cecil is just a man, but he only puts himself in danger in this scene, no backup, and just to slow Omni-Man down.

1:01: I love that small look of regret on Nolan’s face when Cecil tells him he knows there was a good reason to why Omni-Man killed the Guardians. You can kinda tell that Nolan didn’t really want to kill them, but because of his loyalty to Viltrum, he probably felt obligated to eliminate them as part of his mission. It’s heartbreaking to see that Nolan somewhat regrets what he’s done, but he probably knows he must complete his mission for Viltrum and that it’s too late to turn back now.

The dialogue in this scene is top notch. It's really hard to do superhero type shows of any kind and still make them "real". Nolan wasn't cartoonishly blood thirsty, but he has a mission and wants to complete it. But Cecil was able to get past his tough exterior with probing questions. Just well done. Better dialogue than anything, for example, done in the DC universe, other than the Heath Ledger and Tom Hardy Batman movies.

Non-comic reader here. I think his reasons are pretty clear. "Earth isn't yours to rule" "We have a responsibility, as Viltrumites." "Mark don't waste your time on the low human issues" I feel like it's pretty obvious why Omni does the things he does. I may be wrong, but I don't see how.
@danidran
3 жыл бұрын
Unlike the comic the show has given a few obvious hints for you to figure out his reason. He'll explain the more obvious one in the next episode, but there's an even more secret reason behind what he's doing that wouldn't be said until season 2 (or season 3, depends on how they do it). What's cool about it is that they even hinted some of that with his dialogues and reactions. Just ask yourself, why didn't he kill the Guardians until now if he's been on Earth for 20 years?
@eatme982

@Master Derin I assume, given that he seemed to have positive interactions with them and his conversation with Cecil, that he liked them. They were his friends for years. It's just that his mission came first, and when he couldn't put it off anymore he had to do it.

@Master Derin I don't, really. He came to care for them and his family. Maybe so much so that he put thoughts of domination out of his mind. With the announcement of Season 2, this scene popped back up in my recommended section and I gotta say this: I don't think Cecil's actor, Walton Goggins, gets enough credit for how convincing his acting was for Cecil. Checking BehindtheVoiceActors, he's had maybe three roles including Cecil, but he fucking nails the tone. He's absolutely no nonsense, no bullshit, but at the same time there's moments where Cecil lets his emotional guard down and you can hear it in his voice. The way he retorts "They were your friends! And so was I!", that's not JUST him stalling Nolan, there's genuine anger and hurt in his voice. Cecil was so perfectly cast and it's an incredible shame that Goggins hasn't had many more VA roles. And I can't wait to hear more of him in Season 2 (Apparently along with Josh Keaton, which is fucking rad, he played Hal Jordan in Green Lantern: The Animated Series and I desperately hope he gets to play someone that sounds similar to Hal as well).
