Also, I understand how you'd want to be a lifetime member of the NRA. thegunpenguin well, the NRA has its critics and rightly so. Like any organization they have their good and bad points and are not perfect. Some of their positions have had me scratch my head bewildered and I’m not a big fan of the current Managment. However, they are a strong voice for our 2A freedoms and as such should be supported. I think it’s important to not to sit idly by and hope the NRA will push our cause. We need to watch them carefully and write emails and letters to our representatives, support additional grassroots 2A organizations in our states and support Gun Owners of America as an alternative group. We can’t sit out and hope our elected officials will do right, or that the NRA will do the right thing all the time. We need to be engaged and let our voices be heard. In terms of our political differences between Liberals and Conservatives, it comes down to how much government do we want or need and what should we spend our money on for humanity. All debatable and points to discuss. Just don’t screw with our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Everything else is just a debate.

But, I fear that change is impossible until the current leadership is entirely replaced. It looks like the current captains of the ship are more interested in money than our rights. Once new leadership is in place, we'll have a good shot at making a real push for restoration of our rights. As a lifetime member, what are your thoughts? Also, you're absolutely right about the smaller organizations: most of the seem to focus more purely on 2A. On your last points, you're absolutely right; preservation of our founding documents is paramount, and the remaining arguments are ones of degrees, much like the discussions that mothered our country into being. My biggest problem with those to the far sides of both parties is the lack of respect for our most important document. Much like 2A, I view any restriction of free speech and invasion of religion into governance as unconstitutional and illegal violations of the First Amendment. The extremes of both sides seem content to shred the First Amendment, though for different reasons, relating to different things. But, the end would look much the same. Extremism leads to same point, but there are a few roads that get there. And while liberals wants to demolish the Second Amendment, I'm very disappointed by how slow some on the right are to re-instate our rights. The Constitution just doesn't mean what it once did for the average American. What do you think?

And my brother is just as liberal as me and we agree on a scary number of things, but he has no problem saying he'd like to ban firearms completely, so... suffice it to say I won't shoot blue rock with him anytime soon. My 60 year old uncle likes guns and we get along well enough but he also is old enough that when he was a kid he was "taught" and still believes that gay people are pedophiles and feminism is destroying America. Nice video, not too many out there willing to admit that they are "progressive liberal" much less discuss why. I only agree with the eventual consensus that gun owners can join together over their enjoyment of firearms. However, I came to be a ardent gun rights and 2A supporter in my 30s. I grew up in a very liberal town (NYC), in fairly apolitical family (parents and brothers rarely voted), and entered a very left-leaning profession (medicine in general and pediatrics in particular) I cannot be a progressive liberal (in the American sense). It was only after getting married and having children and working in private practice in a rural town that I began to focus on the type of community and country I wanted to live in, raise my children and leave for my grandkids. I have never seen so much waste as in healthcare. When he spoke about Monopoly's the only true Monopoly is the government/state. Again, if you look at corporations they cannot force you to use their services or buy their products, no matter what size. However the government can force you to pay for them or subsidize them. For example look at the US Postal Service, public schools, roads, etc. Usually service is not as good as private companies and stifle innovation. Look at things that were finally deregulated and were able to then grow. Air fares were only affordable only to the rich until deregulation of the airlines, phone calls were super expensive and slow especially when calling out of your local region (forget across the country just even a different area code within the same state), the trucking industries had their rates deregulated so now we get products for cheaper, the beer and beverage industry was deregulated so now we have microbrews, the list goes on and on. There can be no more evil corporation monopolies with gov't. help: CRONY capitalism, not true capitalism. I too believe in individual liberty and PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY but to me that also means that the government should stay out of my bedroom, my examroom and my wallet. Sorry about the length of this comment. Again, I consider the video very good, quite daring in fact for a gun owner.
@thegunpenguin
5 жыл бұрын
Don't apologize at all for the length of your comment. I really appreciated reading your perspective, and I'm very grateful to you for taking the time to both watch the video, and to share your thoughts. Your comments brought back to my mind what I see as the fundamental problem with America at the moment. Both sides assume that the individual voters on the other team have nefarious plans, long-term goals that involve the destruction of our country and way of life; or in the least, they maintain that folks ascribing to the opposing viewpoint are stupid or morally deficient in some way. This view is pure fantasy. Sure, some folks are just rotten assholes, but most people fundamentally want good things for their families and country. You and I want the same stuff, but we see a different route to those goals. And if I’ve learned anything in my somewhat brief time on Earth, it’s that the middle route is probably the safest, sanest way, even if it’s hard to see that most of the time. Your perspective on healthcare is very enlightening, and I have to defer to your expertise there. I have some serious long-term health problems that have certainly colored my view of the American medical system, and a few of my closest friends are physicians. A few of those friends take a different view than yours of the best way forward, while a few others more or less mirror your sentiments. While I certainly have my own opinions on healthcare, I’d say that the public at large hasn’t spent enough time consulting with physicians about what can best be done to overhaul the system, whether that’s less regulation, more, or something far more radical. The latter seems most appealing to me, but I’m not a physician, and there’s little chance of me understanding the system with anything approaching nuance. I respect your economic views as well, and it seems like we both want the same thing, ultimately. I’m self-employed and seek economic freedom through the regulation of businesses far larger than my own. But beyond that, it would seem that we both feel that the real problem is a deeper one, and serious change to the way the government runs is necessary. Here’s where I point to the middle ground again. Forgive the overly simplified argument that I’m about to make, but we could both spend all day writing about this to fully make either case. Your examples of de-regulation jump-starting an industry are absolutely valid and very sensible. But, I can find just as many cases to the contrary. So we’re back to a place where we see that the problem is HOW we regulate industries, HOW we allow companies to vertically integrate, HOW we let local governments represent the will of the people. Something that I rarely hear mentioned, is that capitalistic systems have a definite end point. Again, this is a horribly simplistic example, and a really stupid one to boot, but it works for brevity. Eventually, at the end of a game of Monopoly, one person wins because they own the entire board. This happens on a large scale and slowly in the real world. The world has only known laissez-faire systems for a few centuries, and it would seem that we’re nearing that end point. Most leftists see some derivative of communistic thought as the solution, but that’s foolish, and that system also has a defined end point that looks pretty similar. Teddy Roosevelt was on the right track, but his idea of high-level regulation has never been truly put into action to see if it works, on a large enough scale, for long enough. And what you won’t hear most leftists say, is that capitalism, until it reaches this end-stage, this terminal point, is the best thing we’ve thought of yet. The answer isn’t to throw out the system, it’s to figure out how to restart it once more. It reminds me of the idea of the republic. At a certain point, there are too many people living in a country for a government to successfully administer a democracy. Eventually there are so many humans voting that you spend the entire next term counting the votes from the last election. A republic is the elegant solution to a system with a terminal point. Surely there is a similar economic solution floating around somewhere. And while I’m saying things that progressives won’t say, I am absolutely no-compromise on personal rights. I will not give an inch on freedom of speech, gun rights, reproductive rights, et al. Not one inch. I hear both sides call for various restrictions of personal rights, but I won’t follow either party down that road. I won’t give one single inch, not for anyone. Anyway, it looks like I wrote you a damn novel. My apologies, but your message was so enlightening and thoughtful, that I felt I had to follow do it justice with a thorough response. Once again, I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

So you've worked in healthcare and you accurately came to the conclusion that it's fucked, but your takeaway is that the government should be less involved? I'm sorry but I vehemently disagree. Healthcare is the one thing I think the government should be more involved in, I want a Canada like system, having been educated about how it works from multiple Canadians, while their are imperfections it's a million times better than what we have. Healthcare was terribly fucked for millions upon millions prior to the ACA, and frankly, it ain't much better post ACA either. Let's be honest, it hurt some Americans, helped more than it hurt but still lots of people in certain states and financial brackets were screwed over by the ACA. Something needs to be done by the Democrats, because let's be honest the Republicans are never going to do anything, they had 6-7 years to think of a replacement and 2 years to implement them yet nothing happened. Shows how feckless their complaining about the ACA was, as they didn't think of anything better and we'll be stuck with it (or nothing) forever if the Democrats don't do anything about it. I still cringe every time I think about how they tried appealing it WITHOUT A REPLACEMENT. So glad that a true hero (though I disliked his politics overall) McCain saved us from that shit, way better than the dumb cunt president who had to hide from deployment due to "bone spurs".

Thanks for sharing this. I am also a liberal leaning person and was interested in a liberal gun owner's take on the subject of guns and that's how I found your video. I have never owned a firearm but I'm exploring some options for home protection and possibly concealed carry eventually. In my research, I have found many gun-related KZitem channels that espouse Nationalistic and religious viewpoints that I frankly find alarming. I haven't mentioned my interest in firearms to any of my liberal friends and probably will not do so. Thanks again!

Morgan, thanks for watching my video. Like yourself, I'm utterly horrified by some of the opinions I hear on gun KZitem. For me, shooting since I was very small, and in a competitive environment, guns are just machined blocks of metal that accelerate a projectile, and are devoid of political meaning. Once guns are tied up with nationalism, religion, and sense of self, pardon my language, but shit gets weird. But enough rambling from me! I want to hear your perspective on all this. What got you interested in firearms? What options are you exploring for personal protection? Again, I very much appreciate you taking the time to both watch this and to comment, and if you have any questions about guns or what it's like owning them, please let me know. Not that you need information from this particular internet dumbdumb, but I figured I'd offer.

thegunpenguin I’ve been interested in owning a gun for a few years, but my wife and I bought a home earlier this year and I feel more invested in protecting ourselves, our home, etc. The current political climate may also be a factor and it makes me nervous knowing how heavily armed some of those on the extreme right tend to be. The prevalence of mass shooting across the US in schools, concerts venues, etc has also made me more aware of the need to protect myself and other, should the need arise . I work at a University and there was an incident last year on our campus that still hangs heavy in my mind. With all that said, I am more budget conscious and have been looking at some options from Taurus since they are modestly priced. I like the G2C and plan on renting one to shoot at my local range soon before purchasing one. I recently shot several of my father-in-law and sister-in-law’s guns on a trip to see them and feel more comfortable with the simplicity of a revolver, but I like the capacity that comes with a semi-automatic. However, I feel like I could become just as comfortable with a semi-automatic handgun with a little more experience and time. Any suggestions for me?
@thegunpenguin

That all makes a lot of sense to me, and I can relate. Prior to recent cultural shifts, I was shooting more for fun, but I've recently begun to focus on self-defense. I'm really put off by the sort of home invasion fantasies that a few gun owners seem to have, though, and I hope I never, ever have to use any weapon for self-defense, but it's better that we at least know what we're doing. Anyhow, I definitely identify with your reasoning. As for choosing a gun, I would recommend that you steer clear of the Taurus if you can, but if you absolutely can't spend more than that, or if you just love the G2c, get that one. At the end of the day, shooting the gun matters more than the gun itself. Also, I'm glad you're not going with a revolver, and that's coming from a revolver fan. I've had to train hard to be able to reload mine quickly, and with that training comes the expense of ammo, though you could do it with practice snap caps. If I were going to recommend a few guns for you, here's what I would try, in order of expensiveness. 1. Something surplus would be a fine choice, like a Makarov or a Star, or a Beretta 92S. These guns might be old, and some of them are too big and heavy, but they're proven, and they work. These are in the $175-300 zone. 2. Ruger LC9S Pro. This is a fantastic little gun for the money, and can be found for $230-250. This is probably the one I would get if I were looking at guns under $300 and wanted something light and modern. In fact, this is probably your best option. 3.. The Walther PPS M2. I often see these online for $300-ish. I have a few Walthers, and they are rock solid. 4. One of the somewhat compact plastic service pistols, like the Walther PPQ, a Glock 19, or the HK VP9. These are all $500-ish, and are what I usually recommend folks buy. All of these are rock-solid guns that you will keep for the rest of your life. My PPQ has 6,000 rounds through it without a single malfunction. 5. Something weird and fun, like a Beretta 92, or I dunno, some other cool gun from an 80's action movie. I probably have too many of this variety, and most folks consider them to be rather impractical. And lastly, don't let anybody tell you that you need some crazy expensive gun. Though I would love for you to get a Walther PPQ, this is your first gun, and I think I spent about the same amount as your budget on my first gun. You're probably wondering, why not the Taurus? Taurus has some rather serious issues with quality control, and thereby rather serious issues with reliability. You might get a Taurus that runs just fine while the one next to it can't make it through a magazine without a malfunction. Most modern semi-autos are incredibly reliable, so I can't in good conscience recommend that someone get one of the few modern semi-autos to have trouble. There are people who have Taurus guns that run just fine, but a lot of people don't. But still, a Taurus is a lot better than no gun.

Thanks for the feedback! I don't know many people that I can hit up for this kind of info. What's your opinion on buying a gun used from a pawn shop or used gun seller?
@thegunpenguin
6 жыл бұрын
I'm happy to help. Truly. As long as you're purchasing a quality gun, it's almost always fine to buy a used gun. I say almost always because some guns don't handle abuse as well as others. But, if you're buying a nice modern semi-auto pistol from Glock, Beretta, Walther, HK, Ruger, CZ, et. al. it'll run. Most people who buy guns sell them with less than 1,000 rounds through them, and that's a negligible amount of wear for a quality pistol. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a used gun if the price is right. If you see a gun that's been owned by somebody like me who's shooting thousands of rounds a month, it will likely be pretty obvious when you visually inspect the gun.

But then I saw his political stance (Mostly Liberal), and I realized that him and I were pretty opposites. But I thought there had to be more to it, since I agreed with pretty much everything else he talked about. George Carlin was great! One of the best of his kind, to be sure. I think what you're experiencing is very valuable. We're taught that we ought to be politically monolithic, but no one really is. I have many conservative opinions, more liberal ones, and more than a few that defy classification. I tend to vote left because, overall, I tend to have more ideological similarities with folks on that side. But I would just as easily vote for a conservative candidate if I felt best represented by them. This idea that politics are all-or-nothing has brought us to a dangerous place where we've begun to see those who believe differently as somehow silly or inferior or misinformed. I detest it. Folks on the right are intelligent, good people, and so are folks on the left. When we see that we have more in common than we previously realized, we're making good, solid progress. And I don't know about you, but I'm not going to have someone tell me that I have to adopt a whole set of ideas -- that's just plain un-American. CNN and Fox can keep that shit to themselves!

@@thegunpenguin I couldn't agree more, and I couldn't have said it better myself. That's what I appreciated about Carlin. He criticized both sides of the spectrum, showing that it's entirely possible to like and dislike both sides. He's the reason I've found common ground with Liberalism. Matter of fact, if it wasn't for him, I never would've found out the Liberal Gun Club was a thing. Fox news definitely wouldn't want me knowing that. According to them, people like you don't exist lol. Definitely feeling refreshed now that I've found all of this out. What I think conservatives held onto were the sweet photon torpedos and fights with enemies, and I could be wrong, but in a world where federations exist to connect as many people as possible, to provide basic good conditions to as many people as possible, guns still exist, and all of that is pretty cool. I have similar beliefs as you; pro womens' rights, athiest, etc... yet I'm a staunch 2A supporter who carries a firearm every day. I've voted right, left, and center at one time or another. Unfortunately it's difficult to have any productive conversation with either side because you immediately get labeled a libtard, MAGAtard, RINO... whatever. Everyone wants to categorize themselves and others, it's rarely that simple though. It also doesn't help that the media, politicians, lobbiests, etc all seem hell bent on keeping the country divided. As long as they keep us scared of party A or party B, they know we'll keep voting for their direct competition. It's how they keep the same people in power. Nobody wants to "throw their vote away" on somebody they know won't win. Anyway, I really enjoyed the video and wish other people were as rational and open minded as you.

The issue of self defense comes up a lot with progressive/liberal gun owners, but i do not see the issues of hunting and conservation come up much. I grew up in very rural PNW, and we grew and hunted most of our food. And due to the impact of human civilization on nature, i feel it is our duty to help conserve and maintain what we can. And that includes culling species that will overrun without natural predators. We messed things up and we have to step up. Additionally, the game can be used to feed underprivileged families and the homeless.

I think if more gun owners were better trained there would be less firearm related deaths and might bridge the gap to help change anti-gun liberals into at least relaxing their stance against guns. By the way, I had already been watching your gun review videos. I have a dialed in 1911 as my main pistol and a little Shield 9mm, but I'm trying to decide on a good full sized 9mm. I'm holding off because I keep cycling through a loop of four 9mm choices, Browning Hi-Power with MK3 Firearms, or Robar trigger work, a CZ-P01 with Cajon trigger work, a HK USP pr P2000 (in California I can't get P30) with Grayguns trigger job LEM, or the Beretta PX4. Because I'm so trained to use the thumb safety, I'm leaning toward 9mm pistols with a thumb safety which is having me look closer at the Hi-Power. Decisions decisions.

Thank you so much for the support! It's always a pleasure to hear from a fellow musician. Among those choices, the USP and P2000 are the most reliable, followed very closely by the Beretta. I've done extensive long-term testing on multiple HK models, and they are nearly indestructible. I personally consider the Hi Power to be too antiquated. If you want to carry it because it's cool, that's totally understandable, but it has multiple disadvantages when compared to everything else on your list. It's like my love of the Makarov: I've got just about every modern pistol, but I find myself strapping on the Makarov very, very often. It's an objectively terrible choice next to any of my Glocks, HKs, Walthers, Berettas, or whatever, but I just like the damn thing, so I make a choice that I know is dumb, simply because I think the Mak is cool. Coolness is a legitimate reason to make a choice! Coolness is the reason we still like 1911s. I love shooting mine, but it's not very useful or practical. However, it is badass. For carry, the P2000 is a great option, while I'd probably recommend the USP for home defense. Anyhow, you don't need the opinion of some internet jackoff making gun videos, but there it is all the same!

Pinhead Larry I think it’s more than just gun control. Many things like mental issues, jobs, and society itself are contributing to the mass shootings. Also mass shootings are a branch of gun violence including the inner city communities with their lack of education and job opportunities. But no one doesn’t want to talk about these things because it’s not “verbally sexy” to politicians and the public. I don’t hear any Democrats and Republicans talk about the trade school programs which can be expanded to not only teens but to adults as well. I only heard about that from Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs and he’s conservative. We can’t stop every violent thing that happens with scorched earth laws(wish we could) but we need to slow down the automation technology in the work industry and give everyone some time to catch up. We also need to come up with better safety nets for people not just getting laid off but for also people who get fired(yes I said fired because people get angry and depressed and tend to do stupid things like shoot up a place) so that they can relearn a trade and get back to work because bills like time doesn’t wait for no man.

Thanks for your perspective. I’m a former republican turned independent (mostly due to the social views of Republicans). I don’t know where you live but wonder if you lived in a place that has Democrats inexplicably trying to remove more 2nd Amendment rights if that would sway you to vote for a Republican or a third party (rare as they are)?

I've traveled for a living, and I've certainly visited those places. Let me be very clear: I'm not necessarily a Democrat, though I often vote that way. Also, I'm not a single-issue voter. I value women's rights and freedom of religion just as much as I value 2A. The left has more than few problems, and some of them are extremely serious. Choosing between the two parties in 2020 is more about choosing which set of rights you're most willing to lose than it is about choosing what you want to gain. The Republicans are only marginally more pro-2A than the Democrats these days. Voting that direction isn't a safe bet. I regularly vote independent at the local level, where it matters, but no independent candidate has a shot in a presidential election, and even Senate and House runs are brutal for anyone outside of the system. This conversation points out the general problem with a two-party system, and the bigger problem of incongruous beliefs in the parties themselves. The Republicans say, "We stand for freedom! Unless you mean freedom of religion, freedom to control your own body, and the freedom to run your small business." The Democrats say, "The state will help you accomplish your goals! Unless those goals are to speak your mind, defend your home, or run your business the way you want." Pick the poison you're most comfortable with, I suppose. I'm slightly more comfortable with one over the other, but only just.

Love the video. Great topic. Many things to consider. If you don't mind me asking, how do you feel about the current Democrat position of very loose (if not open) borders and granting amnesty? I asked because while I agree with you that no individual should be tied down by any single idea or position, I find that (outside of the 2nd Amendment "debate") open borders and foreign policy preferences expressed by both parties are the areas in which The US is most likely to find itself in treacherous waters. I think this so greatly effects domestic policy that it does directly affect the desire of government for more government control and it's abhorrence towards a more self-reliant populus (i.e. a citizenry founded and standing on individual freedoms instead of hive mind groupism). I've loved listening to Anthony Weiner, Yaron Brook, Dennis Kucinich, Ron Paul, Bernie Sanders and Thomas Sowell. I've read Karl Marx and Ayn Rand. I think being anti-war and pro-gun is not a contradiction. So I think I got your drift about feeling ostracized by the polarity of our current system. I think we'd probably benefit from moving away from a two-party system. But good luck with that....

Everyone has the RIGHT to defend themselves, but gun ownership in itself is a PRIVILEGE; why should it be any different than owning a license to operate a motor vehicle or practice a certain trade. That is what sets us apart from the psychotic mental patients that originate on the right side of political spectrum.

The conservative view point is that the 2A protects all other rights. Making it far more important to preserve than most other major issues. I am a single issue voter, but only because I don't wanna be left defenseless as left-leaning authoritarians shove arguably immoral laws down my throat. Birth control up to abortion can be acceptable in most Christian circles, I have no problems with ANY minority groups as long as the uphold the constitution, BUT they continually fail to do it. I can't vote democrat, because they're all anti-2A and that's a definite deal breaker. The constitution is worth way more than any healthcare bills etc.

I appreciate your perspective, and I certainly understand why 2A is most important to you. I like guns, and barbecue, and sports and seeing weird shit happen at my local Walmart too! Do you think MTG, or Tucker Carlson, or Nancy Pelosi, or AOC, or Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk or any of these cretins go to Walmart? Do think they eat at Jimmy's Rib Shack next to the industrial highway? Do you think they go to baseball games and get elbowed in the rib from an out of town fan sitting next to them? No! They're out of touch with real life. these are the questions I pose to any liberal gun owner in this comment section. First, a bit about me I'm a disabled vetrain in the middle of libertarian and conservative I'm a younger guy so you see where my mind is coming from asking these questions. First What do you think about gun control? do you believe it works or it doesn't work and why. How do you feel about the NFA and gun restrictions? How do you feel about THe AFT and the numerous atrocities they have committed on gun owners and their rights. finally, Why are you a gun owner what caused you to be interested in the gun community? I would also like to add I will have a civil conversation with anyone including the owner of this channel as long as it stays civil. As a gun owner, I separated myself politically so I can hopefully open up a dialogue to maybe help understand where y'all are coming from.
