As part of San Francisco Muni's annual Heritage Festival (this year, it took place on the 4th weekend of September -- go to www.sfmta.com for details), the agency shows off its vintage, painstakingly restored vehicles from its long, glorious past. This special streetcar, number 578, was built in 1896 and used to be part of the Market Street Railway fleet that operated between the Western Addition and Downtown. For decades, it ran as a work car rather than a passenger streetcar (1906-1955), then it was loaned to the Western Railway Museum near Fairfield for another 28 years before being recalled for the City's Trolley Festival in 1984. Since 1995, the oldest known operating urban streetcar in the world has been used occasionally for charter and special events services like the Muni Heritage Weekend.
On the video, you will hear me, my friend Chris, and operator Vicky as you get a pilot's eye view (a rarity) of the Embarcadero section of the F-Market and Wharves line (also the northern section of the E-Embarcadero, with the boundary being the Ferry Building heading south to Caltrain). You will also see the other vintage streetcars put out on display throughout Saturday, including:
- Streetcar 1 (with the A on top, the first vehicle ever owned by San Francisco Muni)
- Streetcar 228 (Blackpool "Boat" open top car)
- Streetcar 496 (imported from Melbourne)
as well as several PCC streetcars and buses helping out on the F line (as there are so many tourists in the City).
The section I did for this is from the SF Railway Museum (Steuart & Don Chee Way) to Pier 39, essentially the entire route for the historic streetcar. And we paid $0 for the ride!
