This is a video of a customer's car that had a bad vibration when braking. The vibration was determined to be coming from the front brake rotors, which are out of round.
The brake lathe is mounted to the rotor while it is still on the car, so that the rotor is in the exact position that it is in during normal vehicle braking. This allows the lathe to perform the best resurfacing job to the rotor for smooth braking.
While the lathe turns the rotor, the cutting head (seen on the right side in this video) slowly moves across the face of the rotor, removing a few thousands of an inch of material. Removing the material restores the rotor to having no more high and low spots, and instead a flat uniform surface.
The black swirls seen on the rotor are the low spots which were missing during a shallow first cut. The final cut removed enough material to remove these low spots.
