Great Video. I can't imagine buying this stuff. Every penny counts, so saving money is making money I say! I like confirmation that my methods are "approved" by others. Thanks Mike... That bag of tin shot will last you FOREVER!!!

I’ve always heard stannous can go bad, but have yet to actually see it go bad. I made a 50ml dropper bottle with stannous and a small chunk of tin stored in it. Made it over 2 years ago, and it still works perfectly. I also have a dropper with 1g/l of dilute gold chloride in a 50ml bottle. I always test it with that first to make sure it still works, but so far no issues with my 2+yo stannous.

Any modern electronic or electrical solder will do. I''v been using it for years. It all contains tin. Cut a piece about a gram or 2, drop it in HCL, 50 to 100 ml. give it about 20 to 30 minutes. Shake it up and use it. It lasts a month or more. If it starts to turn color / not clear. Just add a bit more solder, after a few minutes it will clear up and it's ready to use.

2 pieces of lead free 95% tin solder, test tube, maybe a plastic drinking straw for insulation, and a 9 volt battery. Electrolysis in HCl, stannous chloride in 5-10 minutes.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Is it straight hydrogen gas that is being produced in this reaction?
@omegageek64

Yes. Hydrogen is produced when most metals react with an acid.

Yeah, I made some over 2 years ago, and it still works fine. It’s slightly cloudy, but still reacts fine with gold solutions. I know stannous is used in other chemistry. I wonder if that warning about it going bad is directed towards other chemistry.

this is what exactly what I do as well. There's another guy on here, utube, who is always testing, and the stuff in his jar and dropper always looks white chalky and degraded, and I think to myself how is that any good but he always gets his positive determination

I made my own stannous chloride nearly 2 years ago, store it in a little dropper bottle along with a tiny chunk of tin. Mine is kinda cloudy, but it still works. I also have droppers with 1g/l of gold chloride. Anytime I need stannous, I’ll double check it with my known gold solution first and it still works. I do keep my stannous stored in a cool, dry, dark cupboard. I’ve always heard it can go bad, but so far I’ve never had any go bad.

@uspockdad6429 the cloudiness is it going bad that's the stannous chloride degrading out as tin chloride

I just started using the same brand of HCL. Yours and everyone I see using the same brand are a clear liquid. Mine has a yellow tint. How come?

Likely contaminated with something. Maybe iron.

Can this be used to test if jewelry is really gold?
@omegageek64

No. You'll need a special acid test kit for that.

Yeah, stannous can really only tell you is gold or other PMs are in a solution. Gold scratch test kits will provide Aqua Regia in varying strengths to test gold jewelry. There is also a device called Kee Gold tester that I use to test jewelry in the field. It’s paid for itself 3-4times over for me, and is quicker and less likely to get a seller having a problem with the testing.

Mike can Pewter chunks / pieces be used to make stannous in demand ?

I didn't know not to let it boil. Ooops. Is there a reason for this? And I am so cheap I pick up the tiny balls after removing big bga chips and save them for making mine.

High heat and exposure to air both seem to shorten the useful lifetime of the stuff before it oxidizes and stops being reliable. Boiling heats it and exposes it to lots of air. Tin balls from BGAs work well when you have them. I've used that method myself.
