“Dull film” - really? I’ve heard many derogatory comments about George Lazenby, but you may be among the few to consider the whole film “dull”! But as you correctly say: each to his own opinion. Brace yourself, here’s mine: George Lazenby (pronounced LAY-zen-bee) was a daring choice for James Bond. Despite his lack of experience, director Peter Hunt was confident of coaxing a solid, credible performance out of him. Turns out he was absolutely right! Lazenby was a refreshing change after two wooden performances by Sean Connery. (You want dull? Try “Thunderball”!) He was the most athletic Bond and, until Timothy Dalton in “Licence To Kill,” the most human. His task was even more daunting, as Hunt placed more emphasis on character and plot. Just the notion of a newcomer replacing Connery was difficult for many - including critics - to cope with! Hunt loved the novel - one of Ian Fleming’s best - and was determined to remain as faithful as possible to it. He chose not to rely upon sci-fi sets and machinery, and his action scenes fit the story. Richard Maibaum’s screenplay was witty, well-structured, and gave the excellent cast a lot to work with. The threat of a deadly global virus is more relevant today. And the idea of people being hypnotized may not be as far-fetched as you think; we do, after all, have political and religious cults here in the United States. I agree that John Barry’s score is one of his finest. The result is, as a whole, the best Bond film since “From Russia With Love.” In my opinion, “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” is the best film of the series - starring the best Bond, George Lazenby. Not bad for, as Lazenby describes himself, “a boy from the backwoods of Australia.”

Apologies for not replying earlier was off-grid as it were. You make a lot of good points. I think it definitely is a the bond film that divides opinion for sure. I think a lot of Bond enthusiasts like the film and the book very much. Lazenby does a terrific job considering the shoes he was filling and the pressure he must have been under. But I feel if you asked the general public which is their fave or top 10 Bond films I'd be very surprised if this featured in them. But I might be very much mistaken. You should do a review and put your appreciation for the film out there. Thanks for your comments Thomas👍😎
