I remember overhearing Suguna Varadachari asking you something about Saragunapalimpa during one of your concerts at Alamelumangapuram Aanjaneyar Kovil. Then I realised that like me, great singers also like your SaraguNapalimpa. One of my early favourites of Sanjay. For a morale booster any time, that is my go to song. Many thanks.

Thanks for this fantastic series, Sir. I am lapping it up and look forward to more. Incidentally, I happened to be a student at a school in Besant Nagar where your sister taught Sanskrit, many years ago. I recall that she taught a small group of us "Maitreem Bhajatha" for the school annual day, with exacting pronunciation. She also beautifully sang an Annamacharya kriti once on stage during a school event, although the exact song escapes me now. I, then, went on to study high school at Vidya Mandir, Mylapore, and often heard folks very proudly claiming that you are an alumnus.

I was taught by my teacher, a rare varnam in kedaragowla by Rudra patnam Venkata Ramana shastri which has pdnd phrases many times. Talam misra jhampa. what is the verdict. Are such phrases allowed or not in kedaragowla?

Dear Sri Sanjay, A humble request. Most of your audience know Thamizh. You are also singing many Thamizh Lyrics. How about explaining in Thamizh ? You give subtitles in English for those Rasikas who don’t know the Tamizh ( not Tamil).Will it not give a more Homely & Motherly feelings, since Thamizh is our Mother Tongue. Your Rasikan V H S Moni.

What is wrong if you are going to deviate a little and what is sung is pleasing to hear. Sticking to tradition , I feel, is like singing without freedom.
@ganesanr736

Your point is right. Deviation only gave way to get new super super Ragas. Using Chathusruti Daivatham While ascending in Natabairavi gives a beautiful Bairavi.

@@ganesanr736 Historically, the Ragam Bhairavi preceded Ragam Natabhairavi in origins and evolution.
@ganesanr736

@@ananthakrishnap5507 Ok Even then we can take - Beautiful Natabairavi was evaluated from Bairavi without using Chathusruti Daivatham in Aarohanam. Super ! Even my conclusion is - All Ragas came first - From that Swaraas were identified and just arrived. Subsequently 72 Melakartha Ragas and all. When we hear the Ragas - even 22 Swara Sthanas are not sufficient. And more number of subtle Swara Sthanas are there. Once I heard a Lecture Demo in a Mylapore Sabha - Where the Vidwamsini sung Sahana for 10 minutes - and asked the Musicians who were attending - *Can you able to Notate what I sung - You cannot. She further told - Swaras are just for a reference. One cannot and should not stick to that alone - while singing*

Very interesting. One quick question though. If Ma-Pa-Da-Ni-Da is sung in the descending scale, it is actually wrong? In the sense, does it demonstrably violate the structure of the rage to such a degree as to contaminate its purity? If that is the case, then many, many artists over many years would all be culpable! Either that or it's a very "forgiving" raga!
@prasakodees6306

I don't understand why nsrgrs would ok permitted but mpdnd wouldn't. They both seem to follow the same principle (that you can do rgr because you descend immediately from g, and you can do dnd for the same reason.
@ashutoshramkumar5270
2 жыл бұрын
The Aarohanam goes as "S R2 M1 P N2 S*" Hence If the Phrase MPD arrives the subsequent note should be Dha or lower as Dha is only used in the descending. But RGR is permissible as Ga is immediately followed by Ri , a value/frequency lower than Ga. Hope that clears the confusion

One can see the reason as to just sticking Carnatic music only being a purist and staying away from the film(y) variety - or just an observation from me only. All the best.
