These old films certainly captivated audiences then, and when we are reminded of them now we see how films have evolved. Great thing you are doing with your youtube page!

I can remember seeing men like this on the Bowery in the early 60's, when my parent's would take us there when my father bought a few new suits at the men's clothing stores that were there at the time. We would drive in from Brooklyn. The faces on the men stayed with my my whole life. Now The Bowery has no flop houses or bars, it is filled with million dollar condo's art studios, and restaurants, although many of the restaurant supply stores are still there, and lighting stores also.

In the first decade after the Civil War (1865-1875) thousands of Union veterans filled the Bowery and fell into alcoholism; even a former General (who fought at Gettysburg) spent the last years of his life on the Bowery (he was found near death after a bout of heavy drinking and was taken to a hospital where he died). Every month a veteran received a pension check-- immediately go to a saloon--and spend every cent on drink. Eventually, a law was passed forbidding saloons to cash gov. checks.

At the age these men were in 1956, they'ed be more like World War 1 veterans than WW2

That's what I thought, too. Many lived through the prosperous 1920's. If they weathered the Depression, they were too old for the war, so they would have gotten jobs in defense plants, so I don't understand why they couldn't make it in booming 1956 when anyone could get a job.

It is no more bogus than Nanook of the North. "Real" people act out a situation based upon the reality of their lives. This is not cinema verite... it is a document. Hence, a documentary.

This film was not bogus. I grew up on 6th street just off the Bowery and saw these pathetic people every day of my young life. Later, as a physician, I help them get cleaned up, treated, and rotated off the streets for a few days at a time in the Manhattan Bowery Project infirmary. They were real and pitiful.

The movie was totally bogus. The dialogue completely fake, these were not real people, they were acting out stereotypes.

You've obviously never spent an hour in the Bowery of that era. This film catches the essence of that time and those men.
