Today I drove from Chetumal (capital of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo) to Orange Walk (Belize). Admittedly I was quite nervous as the list of requirements to enter Belize is quite long (info from the Foreign Office).
- Valid proof of corona vaccination
- Possible PCR tests at own expense
- Proof of cash
- Proof of return flight from the country
- Belizean travel health insurance
(Had neither the insurance nor the money and proof of return travel!)
This time it went smoothly. I was not asked for proof of vaccinations, nor was I searched for illegal substances. The whole act lasted two minutes. One of them was going to the toilet to wash my hands.
In Orange Walk I stayed in a super rated hostel. It's called "Casa Ricky's" and is run by a very nice man who really takes care of everything! So if you're going to Orange Walk, make sure to come here.
The story with the neighbors was a bit bizarre. Since his little brother died inexplicably last week, he has been in a very philosophical mode and has spoken a lot about the Bible being fabricated and existence on earth being created by extraterrestrials. Later his bald-headed friend came, who was very drunk and for two hours he honestly talked about how much he likes to drink rum. It got really strange around 11 p.m. A dark man walked up and completely freaked out after I asked his name. "Don't ever ask who I am again, do you understand that?" The weird thing is that one kept talking about rum and the other about the extraterrestrials that are on earth while the other is spinning his wheels and probably waking up the whole neighborhood with his outburst.
Anyway: This was followed by my first "English departure" in Belize.
Interesting facts about Belize:
- Here you pay with US dollars and Belize dollars (exactly half of US dollars). This means that you can get both currencies back when shopping, which often leads to irritation.
Incidentally, also unfair: Although Belize belongs to Great Britain (was a colony), its money is tied to the USA. So if the economy in the United States goes up and the dollar goes up, then Belize gets expensive too...
The prices are expensive anyway: 1 pear, 1 pack of wholemeal bread and 4.5 liters of water cost 5.50 euros.
Sixpack beer (6x0.289l) costs 8.50 euros (cheapest version).
-Snorkelers and divers love Belize - it's the second largest contiguous reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef.
- The largest city is Belize City. Was badly damaged after a hurricane in the 60's and hence Belmopan became the capital. EVERYONE (without exception!) advises against going to Belize City. Many people here have never been to Belize City or just go there briefly when they need to do something. Gang crime is high (the same applies here as in almost every big city in the world: avoid the south!). Almost every street is assigned to a gang - which, like in the USA, consists of the rivalry of the Crips and Bloods. In addition, the Mexican drug cartel "Los Zetas", feared everywhere, is in the corner, since the cocaine trade can be controlled well here.
Given this situation, Belize is one of the most dangerous countries in the world in terms of homicide rate per 100,000 countries. Incidentally, the death penalty is also carried out here.
- Furthermore, the country is very interesting because there are many archeological highlights.
Mayan ruins in particular attract countless people to the country every year.
