When an undergraduate student at the University of Georgia, I remember a course in Business Law where the professor taught that rights do not exist apart from corresponding responsibilities. That was in 1978, and I've never forgotten the lesson.

Great talk Bishop. There were so many things that resonated with me, especially about social media and how children are raised. I had a kid in Walmart last night for example that mouthed off to me and called me "girl" because I looked at him (he was wearing one of those stuffed heads). Keep in mind he was about 10 and I'm in my late thirties. When I was that age I would have never done that. Even though things were difficult growing up, I was taught to respect others, be kind and be selfless. It's horrifying how children treat people. So many parents laugh off their kids mouthing off, misbehaving, bullying others. My jaw hits the floor every time. I was having a talk with my younger brother the other day about social media as well. He is very much involved with the online community because of his work and sees all the vitriol every day. It seems like there is poisonous behavior everywhere you go. Nasty comments on Facebook, Instagram, KZitem, it goes on and on. You don't like someone's hair you think you have the right to cut them down. Don't like their political views, you can call him all the names you want. Some even go so far as to destroy people's lives by getting them fired, losing their relationships. I heard it said that if you want to know what a person is really like, look at their posts. People are free to be themselves behind a computer screen and fear no reprecussions. I know people who seemingly spend all their waking moments online. They document every move they make and even with their kids. I think its wonderful that they want to share their family and I love seeing their children and all the events in their lives but where is the balance? We need to live in the real world more and enjoy what is in front of us. If we are so glued looking down to our phones, we might miss something beautiful and meaningful.

"Without the conscious free and valued repetition of certain patterns of good behavior moral education does not take place". Reminds me of what Dallas Willard said, "You can never get a shower by one drop of water every five minutes daily no matter how long you stand there". Prayer and moral virtue can't be just one drop daily it needs to be practiced constantly.

There is line of thought today that "law follows culture" -- not principle, certainly not truth. Truth cannot be democratized. It isn't "all good." Democracy is not everything, and yet western culture places its bets on everything that it is. Today, in America, a sacramental marriage is no longer a constitutional marriage. Perhaps that's a good thing. It is certainly a moment of shocking clarity. Beautiful talk, as always, Bishop Barron. The beauty of truth and coherence.

Virtues, morals and laws (God's laws) are to keep us from harming ourselves and killing our relationship with God, who created us. Peace and freedom come from knowing that we are in right relationship with God, and what you see as a ball and chain, we see as holy sacrifice that pleases Him. We are free from the torment, sadness, emptiness, rebelliousness and anger of the world and free to rest in the peace of Christ, knowing that God created us, loves us, cares for us and is always working things out for our good. We experience TRUE love every moment of every day, regardless of whether we are alone, abused, insulted, poor or rejected. We are blessed by God because we do His will. Anyone can have this freedom if they choose it...or they can choose to turn away from God and struggle. It's your right to choose!

@@GaoDaHoi Virtues will help us to order our thoughts and actions. If everybody practiced them a harmonious, noble society would be a consequence of that. They need not be viewed as limitations, rather they free us from a disordered way of living. They must be continuously taught because people need to know and practice them. They may not know that these are what they need. Also, there's a saying "virtue is its own reward". So if you do good to somebody, say, if you take care of a poor sick neighbor who has no one to care for her/him then you do it not because you will be paid money in return or because you're happy that you're not killing him/her, but simply because it makes you happy to do it because it's the right thing to do. So, preaching about virtues is not a way for the Church to enslave people but to tell people they have the capacity to do good. The people in the audience don't look like they're enslaved. Seems like they're happy to be there. Don't you hear them laughing? About the Nazi sympathizers, I would not say there were no such people in Church but you should know many priests were murdered by the Nazis. Also, majority of "Houses of Life"(places that sheltered and protected Jews throughout Europe during the war, researched and designated as life-saving shelters by the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation) were Catholic institutions, churches, convents, monasteries, boarding schools. The Florence network is one example of Catholics helping to save Jews. If you visit yadvashem.org you'll see there are Catholics given the title Righteous Among the Nations by the country of Israel. You're implying that because there were Nazi sympathizers in the Church then all Catholics must be so which is false.

Just remember that a gay Christian designed the church of St Peter's and also painted the Sistine chapel. God bless Pope Francis for supporting gays and welcoming then to the Catholic church.

Pope Francis welcomes gays to the church (as we all should) to grow in faith and virtue and learn to carry the cross they have been given as they turn back toward the will of God. We all have our own crosses and must unite them to Christ so that our burden is lighter. Do not mistake this "support" as condoning homosexual activity. All of us in the church are sinners who want to repent of our sins on the path to sainthood. As it is the responsibility of all good Christians to admonish their brothers and sisters when they go astray, it is the responsibility of the church as a whole to heal those parts of the body of Christ that are turned away from God the Father through sin. Alas, there must be the desire to repent, for God knows all (Heb. 4:13). To be chaste is a blessing, and most especially when it is a sacrifice of sexual relations with the one you love. While there is no evidence that Michaelangelo ever acted on his sexual attractions, if he was indeed gay we know he then sacrificed his own inclination as the object of his affections married and had children of his own.

@@ginamedvedz5513 Until the Catholic church accepts gays as equals, it is doomed to crumble as a relic of the past. I hope you will see this change in the years to come. God bless Pope Francis for supporting gays and welcoming them back to the Catholic church.

Equal in the sense that we are all his creation. Same sex attracted people who act on that inclination are not obedient to God, and the Catholic Church is where you go to learn to be obedient to God and allow His will to be done instead of your own. If gay people WANT to learn that, then they ARE welcome as equals, but their goal needs to be sainthood, which will require celibacy.

And, the gates of Hell will not prevail against the Catholic Church. There is an end to the story, at which point Jesus returns to judge the living and the dead.
