81 Wooster Street, Art that’s Large but Delicate
Pat Steir works large - landscape size not window size. The acclaimed painter is known for her waterfall paintings in which she allows thinned oil paint to flow down the canvas - in black and white or in sumptuous color. With a background in publishing, Steir helped launch the artist publisher and bookstore Printed Matter in 1976. She began her waterfall paintings in 1989. Despite their monumentality, her works have a delicacy she learned from both Japanese and Chinese painting traditions.
