This incredible old historic house was built around 1836 for a doctor and businessman. He opened one of the first cotton mills in the state right in front of the house around 1831 and then built the house a few years later. It features 4 massive Doric columns on both sides of the house. The mill prospered for over 20 years before going bankrupt and then sold in 1856.
When it was sold a mill superintendent and native New Englander became a partner in the factory’s new ownership and bought the doctors house sometime after in 1859. During the civil war the mill made clothes and other products for the confederacy.
In 1961 the mill closed its doors for the final time and then in 2004 burned down completely.
The main house was altered significantly around 1890 with two large Victorian bays and a kitchen wing addition. The home has sat vacant since 1961 when the nearby mill closed for the final time.
Unfortunately the future of this house is uncertain but I’m hoping it can be saved and preserved for history. Just glad I could document this beautiful old house for future generations.
Thank you for watching! Hope you enjoy!
