At that time, there were only two sides of the world - the East and the West. Those in charge of the foreign policy had a choice - either Moscow or Washington.
And yet, in 1961, 25 countries of the world decided that they did not want either of the two. In Belgrade, at that time, people were saying that the first conference of the non-aligned was the voice of the small and the free.
From America, messages were coming that the Russian bear, if not stopped, would eventually knock on the door of the non-aligned nations.
The Russians were convinced that the non-aligned would end up aligning themselves.
In Paris, Jean-Paul Sartre was saying that the emergence of non-aligned nations was the greatest event of our time.
In London, Bertrand Russell - that the gathering in Belgrade might be the beginning of a very important development.
Everything was bursting with optimism among the non-aligned, even though it was happening in the years when the world was on the brink of nuclear war.
And when two men only, in Washington and Moscow, could have brought the civilization to an end.
In September of 1961, an ideologically very diverse world explained to the rest of the planet what active and peaceful coexistence meant.
