I am 80 years old and also have seen many westerns, lots of them many times, Once upon a Time in the West in my opinion is the best western ever made. The music is haunting and beautiful. This movie reminds us that our lives are but just like a grain of sand. We are here but a short time and then we are gone. Once upon a time we were.

This entire movie is like a classic painting, or a Mathew Brady photograph, captured in time, in sepia tone shades. The ending is indeed sad, and tragic. But this is what makes this a classic opera transposed onto a film for the ages. Sad, yet beautiful and and a true piece of the film makers art. This film will never be surpassed, in these areas.

So were Henry Fonda and Jason Robards. Both were combat veterans of WW2 in the US Navy. Fonda received the Bronze Star. Robards survived having served on one ship sank by Japanese torpedoes and another hit by Kamikaze which killed 223 of his shipmates. Practically, all the actors of that era were WW2 veterans and that includes Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach.

Leone is working his charm on you .The greatness of a great movie is that after a while you no longer see the actors ,you only see the characters .

Everyone has their likes and dislikes but for me, this movie especially, out of all those Spaghetti Westerns really stands out when you compare it to other films. It is such a huge contrast to films today. It is quirky and offtbeat. Created by a film director from way away on the other side of the globe. His camera's point of view even causes you to stare just as if the faces were right in front of you. Causes my eyes to "hang", in the moment and search the faces, trying to aniticipate the next expression. What a "delicious dish"! (re: borrowing from SNL) Sadly I feel the current "popular" films have moved away from character development, and the lucious quirks of human personality. Today's popular films are 99% about special effects. It has been said that men are more visually stimulated than women. Maybe that's why I can appreciate the older films more. There was more focus on emotion and more crafting of relationships between people, funny, sad etc., on the big screen. I can't help but love the subtle nuances of the human face in this film. Every one of these celluloid frames is a piece of art. I am so glad I "get" it.

@ArshadKhan-re2ve

+Cathleen Mallett I wholeheartedly, without shadow of doubt in my mind, I concur without reservation. The day of movies being produced in celluloid picture is gone and cometh the digital era. Majority of Hollywood contemporary movies are over dramatized, poorly written and directed and produced. Though, they are some great modern music composers and directors. A small percentage of the Hollywood movies are really good, if it's a big name director, but, apart from that, it is boring, not spectacular in every sense. The actors and actresses were beautiful, but, with that beauty came great personality and acting on screen. I love the oldies, either black and white or color. Whatever you are in life and what inspires you is the greatness of something unique. Slightly going off topic, but, still related to my comment, pertaining to your remark about great classic movies. As a writer, I look to character development and a good well written piece of material for the readers to love, enjoy and be part of. I can accept a good movie, if it was made 2 decades later, but, if it can deliver a great story on screen, then I'm appreciative of it. Lately lesser movies are worth the money to watch at the cinema. If someone was to ask me what movies I adore, love and enjoy watching from time and time again. The answer is= The great classic movies. Alas, Hollywood great actors, actresses and producers are gone. For example, Marlene Dietricht, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Judy Garland and many, many more great lovely beautiful ladies. They were the greatest actresses of all time. They could deliver their magnificent personality and acting skills on screen, but, you see today, it's all beauty, but, no personality at all or any great acting skills. Let's take the Marx Brothers, Bop Hope and his road movies, Harold Lloyd, Charles Chaplin, Cary Grant, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, John Wayne western classics, and many more great artists, but, it would take me a whole thesis to write up about all the greatest movie actors and actresses every graced our film screens. I do apologize for the long comment about great movies and what makes them great in the first. 1.Top director. 2. A well written screenplay. 3. In depth character development. 4. Top notch actors and actresses. 5. Producer. I strongly believe Hollywood is boring and today's movies are not the same anymore, all shot in studio's and no real life acting, all done in front of a green screen. I will continue to watch my oldies no matter the outcome. Goodbye all!

A great movie must have a top class director, writer, producer, and music composer. The movie should have really good actors and screenplay. Back in the old days you tended to get that without a hitch and on a fairly limited production budget and you get a brilliant movie. With today's Hollywood movies; most of the blockbusters have been poorly made and haven't delivered a great screnplay performance. There is variables one must take into count, as I noted in my comment. My top directors of today. 1.Nolan 2.David Fincher. 3.Martin Scorsese. 4.Brian De Palma. 5.Francis Ford Coppola. 6.James Cameron. 7. Clint Eastwood. 8.Affleck. 9.F. Gary Gray. 10.Paul Greengrass. 11.James Wan. 12.Quentin Tarantino. 13.Spielberg. 14.John Carpenter. 15.Spike Lee. 16.Ridley Scott. 17.Justin Lin. Returning to what you said about Ennio's music composition; his music work is breathtaking. On the topic of great music. I recommend 'The City of Prague Orchestra' and 'London Music Works'. You can search it on Spotify. I use the app to search music conducted and orchestrated by these two brilliant orchestras'. You will find old classic music of the great western movies on the list. There is another well known music orchestra on Spotify, but, I can't remember who they are. They've conducted most of the spaghetti western movies of Sergio Leone's. If you have Spotify, I can add you as a friend and you can listen to some great movie soundtracks of past and present.

My eyes well up i get choked up and wish i could close my eyes and open them and be back with her in the living room. Music and the arts can do things to a person that are beyond words !!! When we still had only one computer in the house that could reproduce sound, my brother and I were always searching for little sound files on the thing, discovered a thing called midi files one day, but also at one day a file that my dad had named "spaghetti.wav" and contained one of the many versions of this theme song from a vinyl record my dad had bought years a go and that he had recorded onto his computer to see if that would work (these were the 90's, when recording sound wasn't always as easy as it is today). I'm always glad I stumbled upon that little sound clip and asked my dad to play the vinyl record over to a cassette tape that I enjoyed playing many, many times.

I used to think the ending in Casablanca was perfect. Then I watched Once Upon a Time in the West. Now that's the perfect ending. But how any man can say no to Claudia Cardinale escapes me. I still choke up when she says "I hope you'll come back someday....". Bronson's wistful reply. "Someday..."

Brilliant Ennio Morricone, fabulous and the best western movie ever made. I agree with you. :) My second the best movie from all... ...after Amadeus. (Milos Forman) :) Memorable and magical music of Morricone made this movie unforgettable. I can watch it over and over, to cry like for the first time... It's a very powerful movie and all actors are wonderful as well. Well done. I love it. :)
