Love watching you repot. I'm amazed at how smoothly the orchid separated from its old pot (I saw a hammer and was sure you were going to have to smash it ahhh) I'm also amazed and what an incredible root system it grew. I have done so poorly with oncidium types- the only time one did relatively well for me was when I had it in moss. (I eventually lost that plant to the dreaded fusarium infection :( ) I love how you masterfully showcase both the practicality and elegance of inert media. Have a wonderful week!

Hi Rick, for some reason, oncidiums grow very well here in the Pacific Northwest. I am not sure why, but my Sherry Baby, is always doing well, blooms every year for me regardless of its' nutrients or watering schedule. Yours is robust and ready for a new home! Baby looks happy and great! Not a surprise for the orchid expert that you are! Always enjoy your tremendous teaching videos! Thanks! Blessings to you, Rick, Rita

What a treat. This weekend my husband bought my 2nd orchid, an Oncidium Space Race. It smells wonderful! I hopped on here to see if you had a video about Oncidiums and boom! Right here! Of course my question to you is, is it much different than taking care of my Phaleanopsis? I have searched all over the internet and keep getting conflicting information. Keep it wet, don't water too much, likes the sun, keep it shaded, high humidity, nothing over 50% humidity, feed it once a month, feed it every other week. No one seems to agree on anything except that it smells great. I thought I would feed it small amounts each time it gets watered. But I'm unsure as to how often that should be. Right now it is inside, but I will take it outside to my screened porch. I have lots of sun and shade so I'm set for either need. BTW I'm in hot/humid southwest Florida. Thank you for any information you might share. I hope the silent video was just for something new and different and not for a health reason. Take care.

What a beautiful root system on the Sherry Baby! When I saw you lay out the hammer, I thought you were going to use it to break the old pot, lol! Excellent video, thanks so much for posting. Got to love the lava rock and inert media; here in Florida it’s so hot and wet that I’ve found great results just doing that with most orchids or simply mounting bare root on cork, clay or in slat baskets. The oncidium I am potting with leyca beads and lava rock. So far they are thriving! You are the wire wizard! My attempts at doing the wire turn out ridiculous! But I’m still trying and seeing this video has pushed me to try again! Good to see you again; hope all is well with you and your wife. God bless!

Rick, I like the talkies too. I will say the non-talkies generate more questions like… In this video and others you show a pot clip that goes over the edge of the pot, down and into the pot and then up for support. In another video you showed a pot anchor where there is a triangular or rectangular wire shape that sits in the bottom of the pot and then the wire comes up for support. Any reason to choose one design over the other? You teased us with the hammer at the beginning of the video. Have you had to break a ceramic pot to get the orchid out when it is potted in river rock and lava rock?
@rickl.orchids

Hi Rick, thanks again for your wealth of information. My watering schedule is really not that consistent, but for the last year or so, many of my orchids have yellow tips and mottled spots on the tips as well as the main leaves down below. At first I thought I might be giving too much nutrients, so I backed off and lowered the PPM. I have not gone over 140-160 for months now. But I still have the same problem. I also stopped using the lime and that was my last question to you regarding the lime. So I basically started using it again. But my orchids are still having signs of the yellow tips and some spotting on the leaves. For many months I used the same numbers you were using with the cal mag, the better grow, Epsom salts, and occasionally the kelp. Now I am thinking that it is the fact that I am not using the nitrate calcium instead of the urea. I am thinking on buying some calcium so nitrate, but really don't know which brands. I did look up the Jacks, but of course they are so expensive and either sell in huge quantities or very small. Any advice? My orchids are doing pretty well, but they are still suffering with this yellow tip problem. I am very puzzled. I also thought I might not be flushing enough, but this didn't make a difference either. So, I am stumped. thanks, Rita

Hi Mr. Rick! Great video, as always, and I have a Sharry Baby that’s similarly growing up and out of her pot. I ordered 100’ of 12 gauge wire to make pot hangers and rhizome clips, but I notice that your terra cotta pots have many more holes drilled into them than just the 3-4 that are along the bottom of the pots (plus the one in the bottom) that I buy from the big-box stores. Could you please let me know which bit you used to make the holes, or is it just a regular masonry bit, and I should keep it wet (cool) as I’m drilling it out? If you have a video where you demonstrate this, I’m sorry for being redundant, as I try to watch all of your videos - because our climates are pretty close to the same, as I’m in New Orleans, but I must have missed the video where you demonstrated the creation of the additional holes in the pots. Thank you so much for all of your super-helpful videos, you’ve helped a lot of people, more than you can imagine. Bless you and your wife, I pray that both of you can continue to do what’s enjoyable to you in your lives now that she seems to be on the mend and your orchid growing skills keep improving. And, my offer for the whiteboard stands, if you’re interested. ☺️

@@rickl.orchids but don’t you need a wet dry cycle? So then you can overwater? Or is it that you don’t need the wet dry cycle in this media since it is so airy?

Where is your located. As before applying your methods just want to know the local weather conditions you have ,as orchids species are greatly affected by local weather.

As always another great video. How could you stand not saying a single word? Missed listening to you talk, however your demonstration alone was awesome. I have a couple of Dendrobium orchids in tall ceramic pots that I want to repot. I’ve heard some things about something in the ceramic pots that are bad for orchids. Just doesn’t come to mind what that was. As always-thinking of you both.

Hello Ricky You are not here in.you tube. Your viewers are worried about you. Plz give a thumbs-up. My shery babu one new growth got rot and another psudoblube half portion got rot. I removed the new growth from its rizon.and the pseudobolb which was half the portion i.noticed got rot ( not black.rot) i cut.that portion out and apply sinamon powder. I identified root cause was over watering Do you think the spike will.die back.? What can i do more to save the spike.

Loved the video , but why nothing except lava rocks? How do they retain water without bark? Did I miss something?
@kathleenmurphy2379
5 жыл бұрын
Charlie B he Waters often so bark just retains moisture and they don't need water to soften is what my assumption is Rick might be able to give you a better answer but think about them growing in a tree or on a bark slab there's not much water around the roots you just have to water more often. And when he Waters he soaks not water run over them. Some people just water their orchids and whenever the bark sucks up that's what's there for the orchids. I grow mine in bark but they sit in water soaking for a half an hour because those roots are sucking up nutrients while they're soaking they can always take off the nutrients that are touching their roots not the nutrients that are near them in the bark or the Rock

the method I use is almost bare root......the rock just holds them in the pot...…..it provides no nutrition like moss and bark......the rock and stone stays moist in the pots for days......I don't have to water much more than moss or bark...….but I do....when I water them...….I let them soak for 30 minutes maybe more...…..
