Correct, and Hardware Unboxed needs to learn this with his recent DDR4 vs DDR5 video where he showed 3200 cl14 to win over 4000 cl19 with an i3-12100 (the issue here being that the 4000 kit was forced into gear 2 because the locked alderlake chips are stuck at lower VCCSA voltage)

Gear 1 vs Gear 2 overlaps in performance differently depending on your specific memory. For example, if you're using Samsung B Die, then the very tight timings capable in the 3600-3733 range make Gear 1 the clear choice. The timings do need to have backed off quite noticeably as you ramp up frequencies. For Micron REV E, you can sustain reasonable timings at higher frequencies, so I've found a tuned DDR4-4200 Gear 2 setup exceeds performance overall vs a tuned DDR4-3733 Gear 1 setup. Latency is only around 6-8ms more in the same MLC test, but the bandwidth is significantly higher so overall (still depends on the game), the 4200 Gear 2 can still be preferable.

Im not sure if this is why my computer has sudden fps drops. While gaming, midfight in an fps, a micro stutter/micro freeze/fps dip can cost you the fight. I cannot game with these drops. Last but not least, I have yet not tried to reinstall windows. I'm trying not to, I really want to know what is causing these fps drops, while theres NOTHING absolutely nothing running in the background but monitoring softwares like hwinfo/throttlestop(turned off)/msi afterburner stock settings, im using these softwares JUST to monitor idle performance and I visually see the dips on my GPU. I see the gpu usage and power consumption dip to about 20% while simultaneously my CPU usage and power tdp consumption increase by about 10%-30%, all this happens in a split of a second. Wether it be gaming or just using the pc for light stuff or even just watching something. The fps dips are driving me. INSANE. Please I would like someone to shed some light on my fps dip problem. I've asked chatgpt so many questions, Ive watched so many youtube videos to remove stutters and fps drops. Google says my cpu is bottlenecking my GPU but with the CPU being OC, I doubt it and this was not an issue before, it started less than a month ago to be exact.

If youre running like 3200mhz kit you usually get a lot of errors when pushing 3600mhz with similar cas latencies than on 3200mhz speeds. You need to tune a lot of the other latencies or increase the cas to even get it to stable. If your using high speed specced kit lets say 4000mhz it's much less common to get errors with same cas latecnies. You should try doing a similar "guide" with lover specced memory from kingston, crucial or something like that. Bdie scales much better than anything else.

@@mylittlepwny3447 b-die isn't the be-all, end-all. RAM optimization isn't _that_ important on performance. Even on AMD, you can get similar performance running 2400MHz RAM / 1800MHz FCLK (decoupled) than running 3200MHz RAM / 1600MHz FCLK (coupled). RAM optimization is only important if you run balls-to-the-wall benchmarks for scores. RAM timing optimization is very time-consuming and usually not worth the time. Each timing change can lead to hours of testing, granted the right benchmarking tools are even used (no, memtest isn't the right tool for every timing). On that note, the "Ryzen RAM calculator" is a bad idea to follow to-the-letter and requires a lot of knowledge to even make sense of what it spits out to know what will work and what won't. Buildzoid from AHOC has the most comprehensive RAM tests and explanations available on YT, and he's barely gone over the timing latencies involved in two different ways to accomplish two read bursts in two long-ish videos...

To be fair, stock settings is the JEDEC standard, all kits can do it because it is the standard. People who actually care (and thus should know UEFI settings can be saved in profiles before testing) can do it themselves. I understand the "A/B testing" mindset, but for something that actually has such an obvious effect like it's flipping a switch, it doesn't really matter much to show the standard settings. The results will also vary from PC to PC, which would make any "rigorous science" claims of x% improvements moot without the full specs, while any PC will see an improvement from the change.

Wouldn't a 12700 non k not be the same when it comes to memory tuning to a 12700k? Just clarifying because you said non k skus.

My 5800x can do 4066mts 1:1 and my 5600x hit 4000mts 1:1. I was thinking all for Ryzen 5000 can do 4000🤔.

Best alder lake cpus can 4000-4133 at Gear1 so for ddr5 which is 4800+ only possible Gear2
@ShaneMcGrath.

What cpu are you using? Ram speed that high is a large overclock and not guaranteed to work without tweaking voltages. 4800 is stock DDR5 speed at least until Raptor lake on the Intel side which will then be 5600, You are pushing over 1ghz past stock. 12900k has a good memory controller and may need less tweaking, But my 12700k will boot DDR5 6000 in XMP and is stable in windows/browsing but playing some AAA latest games will crash to desktop, Need to pump more voltage into it and run stability tests but I just haven't got around to it, I'm guessing you may have simliar issue and need to follow guides and tweak ram voltages if you want to run that crazy speed.

first you say `Today I explain how the Gear modes affect RAM memory performance on Intel Alder Lake and Rocket Lake CPUs.` then you say `on the intel systems, i can`t speak for rocket lake,... i`m not familiar with them.` guess why i`m here.

But, but, butbutbut... First I have to buy pc in parts and assemble it myself? or maybe pay a bit extra to get the same hw from a system integrator and then you want me to press either "f1" first time the pc boots or "del" later after the first boot to activate xmp profiles, and then you want me to navigate the bios in order to find the settings? naaaah, I just buy the stuff that the big techtubers say I should buy and then I am happy, thinking I have the highest perf in the world even though tuned last gen systems will outperform my stock system. :D

Wow, what a horrible and extremely incorrect take on an entire swath of content creators. I guess that is what is to be expected in this day and age, when one either pushes a narrative, or one doesn't agree with another.

@@davidandrew6855 or maybe such people that run at "stock" just buy a hp, acer or whatnot crap-box of a system and then enjoy the perf that HUB and GN are aiming for. Anybody remember when both GN and HUB went out of their way to run with the official tdp numbers, even though none of the aib partners used those settings out of the box even... okey... yeah... So yeah if you like prebuilds then stick with gn and hub :D

@@Pillokun Again a large paragraph and you say next to nothing. You undermine an entire group of content creators for what? And the fact that the *VAST* majority of PC users don't want to tweak or extract the most out of their system, what is wrong with that? Yet you feel you need to undermine people and write paragraphs that seem to indicate they are stupid? Whatever makes you feel superior I suppose.
@Pillokun

@@davidandrew6855 I undermine those that I consider doing it wrongly, not because of a mistake but because of purposely year after year showing skewed results that only people buying prebuilds by hp/acer and such should look at. And it has nothing to do with any superiority, wth are you even talking about... I simply want that people get the best advices so that they get most perf for their hard earned money.. For years hub and gn have given bad advices based on their skewed results, that I cant stand for. But we are not any techtubers so our opinions/voices does not count, only when other techtubers speak out does anything happen like right now.

@@Pillokun Whatever you say bud, there is different advice for different users, but you fail to understand that. And yes your air of superiority is evident in your comments. We just agree to disagree, you think GN and HUB, and any mainstream content creator is full of bad advice.. much like I think GoG is full of hubris. We are all entitled to those views and opinions. Like I said keep fighting your good fight, the fight nobody really asked anyone to undertake.

Took me a while to dial this in with my x4 hynx-cjr modules: i.postimg.cc/5N4nQn7V/Screenshot-2022-01-29-122038111.jpg But not too bad for a relatively cheap (b-die was going for x3-4 the price at the time) 32gb kit. Definitely made a noticeable difference with 1% lows compared to stock xmp settings.
