One for my baby (and one more for the road) - H. Arlen, J. Mercer (1943). From the film “The sky’s the limit,” where it was performed by Fred Astaire. Among the best known standards, a song famous for its relaxed, bluesy tone, and the way both the lyric and the composition itself perfectly evoke the scene: late night in a deserted bar, with some guy, a recent casualty of a failed love affair (in Mercer’s case, probably with Judy Garland), rambling on and on to a long-suffering bartender about what happened - although he never actually tells him.
Performed by everyone, including (verified on youtube) both Mercer and Arlen separately, Guy Lombardo, Snooky Lanson, Frank Sinatra, Cab Calloway, Harold Arlen, Jane Russell, Marlene Dietrich, Billy Eckstine, Harry James, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, Della Reese, Harry Belafonte, Tony Bennett, Julie London, Perry Como, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Mel Tormé, Frankie Laine, Dean Martin, Chuck Berry, Marvin Gaye, Lou Rawls, Willie Nelson, Susannah McCorkle, Rosemary Clooney, Stacey Kent, Lou Reed, Bette Midler, Iggy Pop, Laura Fygi, Nana Mouskouri, Dianne Reeves, Toots Thielemans, Wes Montgomery and, last but not least, Donald Duck. Second Hand Songs lists 349 performance, so go crazy.
Uke key / Uke keys: F major, then A major. Originally Eb & G. This song is unusual for its length, 57 bars (AABA: 16+16+8+17), or 64 bars counting the intro & outro, but even moreso for its shift of key, where it modulates up four semitones into the second A section and never returns. The mood is set perfectly by the words, of course, but also by the chords. The wordless intro, borrowed from the sheet music (marked “lazily”), sets up the F tonality, but with the entry of the voice we’re given a repeated dominant minor chord, Cmin7. So, immediately, we know it’s dark days ahead. The second half of the A section (“We’re drinking, my friend”) starts with a Bbmaj7, a subdominant suggestion that adds to the bluesy feel.
