Why are the lit tents no good? They are easy to use n cost way less money - but there must be a reason?!

Agreed light tents are too limited. Glad to see i'm not the only one still using a brolly...

Yup, umbrellas are my go-to modifiers. Probably because they’re just too easy to pop on.

I very nearly missed this video because I didn’t get a notification...again! I’m missing a lot of notifications from different channels lately. Most of my still life photography in the studio is either product or food, though I do them for fun not to sell anything. I also like using my studio monos because of the challenge, though if I had a paying client I think I’d use constant lighting. I’m not saying I get many good or even half decent shots, but I enjoy myself. I think I’ve fallen in love with your model, she looked beautiful in that brown coat. Another great video Ed, I’m glad I didn’t miss it in the end but I’m going to check my channel in case there’s any more.

A good first step, thank you Ed. I wonder, is there a logical next step to jazz up a basic product shot to make it a bit more appealing? Is there some basic DIY art direction that can turn product representation into something a bit more appealing than a catalog shot?
@@edverosky It's all about the light, and man o' man, does Karl understand the intricacies of positioning light. Thank you Ed for sharing that tutorial. I'm gonna try to recreate Karl's whiskey shoot. I don't have his fancy strip boxes, but I'm curious to see what I can do with a couple speedlights and two Godox Ad200's. I'm inspired. Thanks again, truly.

Light tents tend to have very low contrast. Yes, the light is soft but it's not flattering at all. The work OK for small and tiny items but items with curved surfaces or shiny surfaces, light tents are a real pain. Don't even bother or think of shooting sunglasses in them!
