Sometimes I wish I was a hermit. Loving God when life gets crazy is a challenge.

Funny you should mention this...sometimes I think I should have been a monk myself. I've been contemplating eating one large meal a day around 1 pm...the OMAD diet. I just started reading the Philokaliaas well wherein the subject of fasting as an ascetical practice is a strong theme. Fasting is good for the body but is also known to have a profound impact on the eye of the heart, the spiritual perception of the soul. Also...our culture has a way of making an idol out of food and the physical pleasure of eating it...often too much of it, hence the growing obesity problem and spiritual sloth problem in our culture. I've been an Intercessory Prayer Warrior for the past few years as well...we can live some traits of a hermit's life while still living in the world. Blessed Miguel Pro, Pray For Us.

That sounds like a topic for a video. "How to stay loving God when life is crazy" I live near many Amish communities and I have always envied their lifestyle... so simple. How about we all form a community of Catholics and we'll live like Amish?! I guess I wouldn't be able to post this..... No cell phone or internet. We'll have to make a few exceptions 😉😊. Fr. Mark Goring Hi Fr! I am a Hermit and have been for 18 years and believe me, it sure is no guarantee of a peaceful, quiet life. One exchanges the outward tumult for the interior, spiritual struggle. So, which ever life you choose or chooses you, get ready for the fight of your life! Indeed, fasting and mortification grows on you gradually and becomes kind of a sweet background music of self offering!

You are literally amazing. Thank you, I am just returning to the Catholic Church. I was living in sin, I abstained from the Eucharist over a year because I was in sin. Once you realize you really can't go up for Holy Communion, you don't. It can dip into scrupulosity, but it was a healthy spiritual exercise. I practiced the Spiritual Communion Prayer. I made my first confession after 20 years away from it (Pretty much since my first when I was a kid) I just don't know what to say. I'm still contemplating what it's meant, the graces granted to me even after all my awfulness. It's really a little by little effort. Adoration changed my life. Scripture changed my life, I just read the Daily Mass readings. So thank you, I have no idea why I'm rambling but thank you Father!

A few months back I started skipping breakfast and as often as I can go to a church near work to spend a few minutes before the Blessed Sacrament and then back to work to eat lunch. My job as an analyst requires heavy thinking. At first I thought not eating breakfast would hinder my performance at work. But with time, I noticed that just a cup of coffee is enough to keep me going and I don't even feel hungry. I actually think I perform better without breakfast. I will have to try the next step to skip lunch too to arrive at one meal a day. Pushing the limit, my temper gets shorter when I am hungry. God help me.

Father, your presentations are very helpful and I appreciate your kind, down-to-earth demeanor. I am Eastern Orthodox and have been working on deepening the practice of fasting over the past couple of years. The Orthodox Church still strongly promotes fasting on Wednesday, Friday, and during the penitential seasons such as Advent and Lent. This is just the starting point before going even deeper to get to one meal a day as many Orthodox monks still do. I am saddened that the Roman Catholic Church has lowered the bar on fasting. The Church needs to keep her standards high so we are challenged to aspire to greater heights of faith and holiness. Thankfully we have the examples of so many saints who loved God more than anything this world has to offer. Thanks again for your teaching- you are a gifted and effective speaker and I look forward to hearing more. By the way, the room you are standing in looks very Orthodox! Peace be with you!

The first college I attended was a Benedictine college. There is a call for balance. I have also gone on retreat at the Trappist monastery in Conyers, GA. A common practice I have found when on retreats, and following the Benedictine Rule, is the small breakfast after Mass. There is generally a main meal at mid day and a small repast, a simple soup at supper. It's a pattern that I like. I've always eaten breakfast and like making my mid day meal my main meal of the day. Brother Victor-Antoine d'Avilla-Latourrette has written some great cookbooks. The one I use is This Good Food.

I started doing the so called intermittent fasting - 8 h a day you eat, 16 h a day you fast - about a year ago. It's supposed to be very beneficial for your health (I confirm). I have also noticed that the short periods of fasting reduce my cravings, i.e. after breaking the habit of constantly thinking what to eat next (modern dieticians and 5 meals a day...). I don't even notice I might/should be hungry. The way to 1 meal a day isn't that long if you gradually lengthen the fasting periods. I have also noticed spiritual benefits - you concentrate less on satisfying your own true or imaginary desires. I would agree that breaking gluttony is key to controlling other drives (to have sex, to possess). It's a shame we live in a culture that is suffused in consumerism and the general attitude is that satisfying your desires/cravings is the way to happiness.

Father, your blessing. I think we should not drink just the water of a single meal per day, because it is not enough to sustain our body. If we are dehydrated, there is a real danger of constipation, which can alter both the mood and the physic, it is very bad for our body. And how The Catechism says that, "[...] For this reason man may not despise his bodily life. Rather he is obliged to regard his body as good and to hold it in honour since God has created it and will raise it up on the last day" (CCC, 364), it seems to me that we should take care of our health on that aspect. Do you agree?

What a beautiful dinning hall I see! Glad you could share, being a busy person would save a lot of time eating but once a day. The preparation, cleaning etc would just be once a day. I'd be concerned about getting kidney stones more often if I didn't drink more water but I'm glad there's a book to learn from. Thanks Father.

Fasting was one thing I feared the most because I did not know fully yet the physical and spiritual benefits I could get. But a group called Holy Infant Community founded by late Rev. Fr. Jose Augusto C. Sison, a diocesan priest here in Tagum City, Davao, Philippines, inspired me to fast. The Holy Spirit dictates every now and then that people fast for the salvation of souls of both the dead and the living. For all the problems happening in the world. According to Mama Mary during one of her apparitions, thru prayers we fear not the future. But thru prayer and fasting we conquer the devil. The community has really helped me grow. It is a Christian Catholic charismatic group holding prayer meetings. Inspired dictations, visions and messages keep pouring in. Amazing! God is truly alive and I deeply am grateful for having come to experience the Holy Spirit while still alive. Really, God alone suffices. Praise the Lord!

The prayers of the Holy Rosary are powerful, as they were given to us by the Holy Ghost. That being said, JPII had no right to "change" the Rosary. The Rosary is Our Lady's psalter, and it is under the jurisdiction of Our Lady, not the popes. One must of course respect the authority of the Holy Father, but that authority is not unlimited. Our Lady of Fatima added the prayer after the Gloria Patri at the end of each decade, "Of My Jesus..." If she had any additional "improvements" in mind, she most certainly would have suggested them to St Sr Lucia. JPII is most likely burning in the lower parts of Purgatory because he breathed the intractable pride of modern man who considers himself the measure of all things. Modern man is about to be brought very very low, and various nations that now view themselves as established and indestructible are about to enter the dustbin of history. Preach the Rosary given by Our Lady to St Dominic, accept NO imitations.

What a beautiful dinning hall background for your video. One of my mother's late friends who used to attend the same one room school house by the name of Yvonne [i cannot remember her French Canadian last name right now] used to work in the kitchen of a seminary while she was well into her 70's. She liked to joke about it sometimes when answering a phone call. She would say, "I cannot stay on the phone for too long because I am on my way to work at the priest factory. She got to live like a hermit at home and with lots of good company at work too while remaining single all of her life without having to become a nun.

Thanks, Father G. I needed to hear this. I have been struggling with fasting and wondering what's wrong. I used to fast on bread and water 2x's a week when I was younger. I am now approaching 70 yrs old and that hasn't been working anymore. The desire was there, but I just couldn't maintain that. I have been able to do the traditional church fast of one main meal and 2 smaller meals with nothing else in between. That gave me some solace. But these words of wisdom ring true. The more I try the worse it gets. I am changing my focus and will try this more humble, gentle approach. Thanks again for your guidance. May our dear Lord continue to bless and inspire you.

Finally! It’s ironic that to get some real spiritual food, I listen to a homily on going without it. And how sorely needed are priests like this courageous man to talk on such unpopular subjects. My fasting has been sporadic, but during the times I have, mainly throughout Lent, the grace has been extraordinary... fasting radically reduces the desire for entertainment and increases the desire for prayer. You become hungry for prayer. This homily is excellent! 👍

Many modern and ordinary people I'd watched on KZitem are doing this one meal a day for years now. I'm actually doing the popular intermittent fasting for more than 2 years now eating only lunch and dinner. One meal a day maybe not good for me. I'd be more thinner if I do that. But I guess the physical body is quite maybe not that much of importance comparing it to the health of our souls. Sometimes we became proud of ourselves doing things which seems extraordinary thus leading us maybe to pride, which I personally tried to avoid. Even talking and sharing something to somebody seems letting myself get into pride. I oftentimes think, maybe I should no longer talk, but I guess being a hermit is not for everyone and not for me either.

Dear Father Mark, you opened my eyes to much truth in our Mother Church. I believe, like Joan of Arc, that we have to be willing to die regardless of the politics that surround us. There is no truth in men alone but through the Holy Spirit of our Lord. I am speaking out to my brothers and sisters within my sphere about current events in the hierarchy of the church. The truth will prevail in spite of the adversaries attempts to silence us. May God bless your ministry and the Catholic church. Vivat Jesus!

I am a very busy physician and eating once a day for the last couple of decades allows myself time for prayer. I set my watch for noon and when it goes off, it's time for 'spiritual lunch'. In addition to a nice spiritual discipline, it makes me closer to my patients who often can't afford to eat more than once. It allows one to answer questions about where I am disappearing off to and to share the gospel of the truth that leads us to do all these crazy things. It is a spiritual tool, however, and not worthy of being made into too much, however.
