Reminds me of coffin problems, they kinda have a dark story, basically they're maths problems that are very complicated to solve but once you see the solution it's super obvious and you feel silly for not thinking about it. They were used in the USSR against some groups of people (mostly Jewish people) that the communist party didn't want to be admitted into the universities, and the reason they were used is because the people who failed because of these couldn't really complain as it seems so simple when you see the trick.

First offering an exchange sacrifice and then a pawn, Pragg channeled his inner Fischer. Berkes is a very strong player, and testing him with sacrifices takes a lot of guts. Berkes ignored the first offer but fell for the second one, and the rest is history.

Interesting etymology. I may be wrong but my understanding is that "prAjJa" (with the longer A - a taddhita derivation) would be "intellectual", "wise man" etc. Whereas "prajJa" simply means "intellect", "awareness" and in the context of this name, a more appropriate meaning would be "consciousness"; viz., the name is a variant of the more common "chidAnanda". ok, end of detour. Let us enjoy the chess.

While most of the players from India seem to have a positional style, Pragg is the one that can base his play on whatever the position calls for. Tactical or positional. He seems to handle dynamic tactical positions better than any of them and I think that's why I see him having the biggest upside as compared to the other really good players. Even if he doesn't make the candidates this tournament, you can tell that it's not that far off a feat for him to potentially obtain. He's probably the one player from India that has a style closer to Anand's than any of them.

This french setup was so weird... I've even uploaded the game and checked the database now... not really popular at the very top level. Kinda explains why. Deep in my bones it felt wrong, to give all that space for white while crowding your own pieces. In the line Agad analyses that starts with King E7 Agad says "Queen F3 threatens Queen F6 check". Is that right? The black Queen is defending th F6 square so Queen F6 check doesn't look that strong. But what Queen F3 does threaten is B5 (Antonio's favourite pawn advances again) threatening the rook and if e.g. Rook B6 then Bishop A3 check followed by Queen x F7 check and it's all over. No board here so I could be missing something. And it's only an analysis of a line that didn't happen. And yes, Pragg is amazing. There was a time when the Russian chess team could beat anyone. Looks as if India is taking over that role
