In 2012 I went to Osaka castle with a family friend. We were walking through the south west garden when I was accosted by the most violent raven I've even encountered. I've never feared for my life as much as I did in that moment. It was no ordinary raven. This was a boss raven. It had a scar over it's right eye and I'm 90% sure it was smoking a cigarette.

My grandpa doesn't remember much now, due to his age, but when I asked him about how he used to be a pilot, his face lit up and he said "Yes I've flown a plane. Just beautiful." We talked about the clouds. On my flight to go visit and take care of him for a while, was the first time I ever saw myself above the clouds, that I can remember. I know I flew with him when I was younger (about 6 years old) & told him it looked like the ending to Willy Wonka, but I remember that more like a small photo reel in my brain. To see the clouds and all the world from above in the day, was lovely. I want to fly one day, like you and him.

For the bags of gravel in Sapporo, they're definitely there in winter (I've only been in Hokkaido during the winter only). I've also seen something similar in nearby Otaru, except they have crushed shellfish shells. It's a smart system to help people not slip as much on the roads during winter!

Funny (?) story. I avoided Kyoto on my first (and so far only) trip to Japan in 2107 - because I knew how busy it was, I was travelling alone by bicycle, and I absolutely knew by then that I would plan to go back in 2020, with my wife, and we would wander and enjoy Kyoto together ... and you all know how that turned out. Thanks for helping keep the dream alive - my future itinerary involves a LOT more of Kyushu and Shikoku than if my original plans worked out.
