The 3.8 supercharged engine in the 90's/early 2000's was a great reliable sleeper motor! A few bolt ons and what you assumed was grandma's car is leaving you in the dust. Won't break any records these days but I think it's a perfect combo for your ride! It definitely won't be slow and all you have to do is keep up maintenance on it and it will run forever

Those 3.8 Buicks first came straight in the 60s cars they used those same V6s on newer front wheel drive cars they just put them sideways but those are originally straight mounted engines, I was thinking of putting one of those in mi Oldsmobile Cutlass because it's the same block I just swap all the carburetor stuff onto it or run it EFI like this one.. I could even use the clutch fan on that using the old style water pump from the old '70s 3.8...

Didn't hear any blower wine so I guess the coating on the rotors is gone so I guess that with that stock pulley on it that only makes 6pound at best means that 8 pound is wishful thinking to say it nicely (with a cam it would be less). And I'd be checking plugs or leads or something cause that thing is not running on all 6 cylinders. Apart from that, yes, it's different.

No whine because the zoomies will deafen you. The rotors have plenty of coating left. I can assure you it makes 8psi. Datalog shows it. It's hitting on all 6. It just sounds funny because you're only hearing 3 cylinders from one side of the truck.

@Nicksperformanceauto I have a 1987 MCSS with a lq9 6.0. It has the stock intake and internals, longtube headers, ls7 lifters, 862 heads, and 228/230 cam with a lobe separation of 112. I also have a 4l60e with a 2800 stall and the rearend has posi with 3.73 gears. I drive it to car shows and weekend drives as well as the track to race it. The fastest time I ran was a 13.2 but I'm looking to get it down to the 11s. I plan to get a higher stall, 3200-3500, and possibly 4.10 gears and a retune. Would that be enough, or would a power adder like nitrous be needed to accomplish my goal?
@Nicksperformanceauto
10 ай бұрын

I've been leaning towards a 3.8 build, since the 4.3 has basically zero aftermarket. For a 80s Caprice I'm tracking down. Somebody said they have a good aftermarket, hopefully enough for a 3-500hp n/a build.

@ItsDaJax
6 ай бұрын
@@aidan7102 I could be wrong, but isn't the same s/c used on the Supercoupes? I imagine lack of intercooling is a shortcoming for them, as extra hp loss, on top of the parasitic losses.

6 ай бұрын
@@ItsDaJax tbh i have no idea what a supercoupe was up until a few minutes ago never really looked into series 1 motors or all of the crazy things pontiac used to do in late 80s-90s. have read about a few of them wish i was alive back then but yea the biggest loss these engines have is the fact theyre not intercooled. stock is a 3.8 inch pulley, i think if you put on a zzp stage 2.5 i/c your able to drop down to a 3-3.2 inch not to sure im not yet at that point.
@aidan7102
6 ай бұрын
@@ItsDaJaxpoint is that youll end up doing alot more and spending about the same amount of money to get to 500 hp. sc needs expensive intercooler that gets sandwiched between sc and lim, smaller pulleys, 8 rib aftermarket balancer, cam, built valvetrain, ported heads, bigger t/b, headers, a good tune, e85 or you can go with a diy turbo kit and a cam, tune, and e85 and be making 5-700 hp. best thing about his setup tho is hes not limited by the transmission being made of glass

I've been tossing around the idea of 3.8 swapping a S10 for about a year, I would have personally used a NA short block and use a ZZP top swap and used a S10 2.2 4l60e & TC with a Corvette servo and transgo shift kit.

@@daegan7293 I've heard good things about the top swap, personally I would piece it together and save a few bucks but the ease of just ordering the parts is nice. I would also recommend getting a intercooler for the supercharger to help lower IAT's, a cam, or if you don't want to open the motor up that far then maybe 1.99 rockers, better flowing headers, and some port work to the heads and supercharger. Out of everything I listed the intercooler would probably be the most important. You will need a tune of course.
