I really like what you said about hiking alone. I do hikes in the north island, and always meet a lot of resistance when I tell people that I'm going alone. I mean, I love going with others, but there's a very small amount of people willing to trek into the bush with me haha better to go solo and prepared than never go at all !

I find hiking alone as good soul searching. I can't find anything that really matches the calm and sense of freedom that going up mountains brings. Great video making me wish I could explore the Canadian Rockies again.

Ah man we wish we could have done this hike when we were on Vancouver Island! Was at the top of our list but we didn’t have access to a proper vehicle to get up that road to the trailhead. Nice video 👍
@IdRatherBeHiking

At the beginning of the year they fixed the road so as soon as the weather was decent I went out there to film it. I'm sure the road has been eaten up quite a bit since. Even with a normal vehicle you can get to the 5040 NW ridge trail which is much sooner than Cobalt lake trail. The drive is shorter but the trail is longer but an incredible peak for sure.

Just bring microspikes and a pole. There is one section there at 8:15 in the video where it's really steep and under drops off to a waterfall, just take your time there as an uncontrolled slip wouldn't be good. If you want to go for a hike you can message me through my hiking group: facebook.com/groups/hikingvi

Great video ! I've been up 5040 a few times, and the lake is spectacular. At about 11:10 or so, is that a traverse to Nahmint? I've often wanted to try to get to Nahmint, but I'm not quite sure the best route.

@@IdRatherBeHiking OK, great to know. I was thinking of going up, camping at the top or at the lake (or maybe even doing the hut if I'm feeling that way!), then traversing the next day. Have you been across? I'd love to know how long it takes, there seems like there is a super nice lake there. I've bushwacked to the bottom of French falls a few times from the Nahmint main side (and marked the trail, but there clearly isn't a good way up that side, especially for me, who has a panic attack every time I look down lol. I might go up to 5040 this weekend and explore around the top to suss it out.
